This is the highlight of the trip — a full day dedicated to finding and snorkelling with whale sharks in the South Ari Marine Protected Area (MPA), one of the most reliable places in the world to encounter these gentle giants year-round. Your liveaboard crew scan the surface for tell-tale signs and radio other vessels in the network. When whale sharks are spotted, slip into the water and snorkel alongside them. Bring an underwater camera or GoPro to contribute to photo-ID research. Most budget liveaboards include this as part of the package; some charge a small dhoni fuel surcharge (~£10–15). In the evening, many liveaboards arrange a virtual or in-person session with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme.

Spend the morning on a second whale shark safari in the South Ari MPA — a second chance to encounter these magnificent creatures, and between December and March, manta rays may also appear. After lunch on board, the crew takes you to one of the top snorkel sites in the area, where turtles weave through colourful coral and dogtooth tuna, trevallies, jacks, sweetlips, butterflyfish, wahoo and fusiliers dart around the reef. Water conditions and currents guide the choice of site. When not in the water, enjoy the sun deck.

On departures between February and April, cruise to Madivaru — a protected marine area famed for its two manta ray cleaning stations, where these graceful creatures hover while cleaner fish tend to them. Your crew monitors the radio network with other vessels to maximise encounter chances. If mantas prove elusive, the crew will find alternative snorkel sites where sharks, turtles, eels, octopus and rays can be spotted. Outside manta season, there are still strong chances of encountering solitary manta rays and further whale shark opportunities. After lunch, begin the cruise northwards back toward South Malé Atoll.

Your last full day on the water. Enjoy a final morning snorkel in the tropical reefs as the liveaboard makes its way north. Spend the afternoon watching the Maldives drift by from the sundeck — this is the time to soak it all in. Anchor in Hulhumalé lagoon by late afternoon. Those wishing to stretch their legs can take an optional self-guided walk around Malé — the compact capital is easily explored on foot. Visit the colourful fish market, the Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy) and the waterfront promenade. In the evening, back on board, enjoy a farewell dinner and a presentation on Maldives marine conservation and the NGOs working to protect it.

After a light breakfast on board, disembark the liveaboard and transfer to Malé Velana International Airport for your onward flight. If your flight is late, you can store luggage at the airport or at a guesthouse in Malé and spend a few hours exploring the city independently. If you're not ready to leave, consider adding a night or two on a budget local island such as Maafushi or Guraidhoo — both are accessible by public ferry from Malé for ~£2–5 and offer guesthouses from £25–40/night, beaches and independent snorkel hire.
