G Adventures charges £1,850

£1,115saved per person (60%)

No-markup version: ~£735 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 7-day Indian Ocean dhoni cruise: same route (Malé → South Malé Atoll → Felidhu Atoll → Malé), same reefs and local islands, but booked piece by piece. Instead of a crewed group dhoni charter you use the public ferry network (MTCC/Atoll Transfer speedboats and the local ferry 'dhonis'), sleep in local-island guesthouses in Maafushi, Fulidhoo and Felidhu, and pick up snorkelling trips directly from island dive shops. You'll still get whale-shark snorkelling, reef drop-offs, sandbank picnics, island life and a marine clean-up — roughly a third of the tour operator price, with far more time actually on the islands.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Malé, speedboat to Maafushi (South Malé Atoll)

Malé / Maafushi

Land at Velana International Airport, clear the free 30-day tourist visa on arrival (have your guesthouse booking and return ticket ready), then walk 5 minutes to the jetty next to the airport for the public speedboat to Maafushi. Boats run roughly hourly until late afternoon, ~£22–28 one way, 30 minutes. Book your seat via the Atoll Transfer / iCom Tours counter on arrival or through your guesthouse. Settle into a guesthouse on the bikini beach side, rent a mask and fins from the island dive shops (~£6/day), and swim the house reef before a sunset on the public beach (bikini beach is the only legal swimwear beach — elsewhere cover shoulders and knees). Dinner of mas huni, roshi and grilled tuna at a local café, ~£5–7.

🚌Airport → Maafushi public speedboat ~£25

🛏Local-island guesthouse in Maafushi, twin/double with AC and breakfast (e.g. Arena Beach, Kaani Village or similar) ~£30/night

  • →House-reef snorkel (own gear)
  • →Bikini beach sunset
  • →Island orientation walk
~£75
Day 2

Whale sharks and reefs of South Ari Atoll (day trip from Maafushi)

Maafushi / South Ari Atoll

The tour's signature snorkelling day, self-booked. Maafushi operators run full-day speedboat snorkel safaris to the South Ari marine protected area where whale sharks feed year-round, plus 2–3 reef stops and a sandbank lunch. Book the evening before at any dive shop on the island — full-day trips run ~£65–80 including lunch, gear and marine-fee. Look for operators that cap group size and brief on whale-shark rules (no touching, 3 m distance, no chasing). Alternative if you'd rather save money: a half-day two-reef trip for ~£30. Evening back on Maafushi, dinner ~£7.

🚌Included in day-trip speedboat; walking on island

🛏Guesthouse in Maafushi ~£30/night

  • →Full-day whale-shark & reef snorkel safari (~£70)
  • →Sandbank lunch stop
  • →Optional night snorkel with dive shop (~£25)
~£107
Day 3

Local ferry south to Felidhu Atoll — Felidhu village

Maafushi → Felidhu

A proper local-transport day. Take the morning speedboat/ferry link from Maafushi south to Vashugiri or directly to Felidhu island (Felidhoo) — this requires a change at one of the Vaavu atoll junctions; the easiest, most reliable route is the scheduled MTCC speedboat Maafushi–Felidhoo/Hulhidhoo, ~3–4 hours total, £30–40. Guesthouses will arrange the connection for you; there are only 1–2 crossings a week on some legs, so build your week around the timetable. Felidhu (Felidhoo) is a real fishing island — no resort, no alcohol, a couple of cafés and the tour's included 'Felidhu Island Visit' for free: walk the harbour at 4pm as the tuna boats come in, visit the mosque and the boatyard building wooden dhonis.

🚌Maafushi → Felidhoo scheduled speedboat/local ferry ~£35

🛏Village guesthouse on Felidhoo, twin with fan/AC and breakfast ~£28/night

  • →Harbour walk at tuna-boat landing
  • →Traditional dhoni boatyard visit
  • →Local café lunch
~£85
Day 4

Snorkelling Felidhu Atoll's channel and reef drop-offs

Felidhu Atoll

Arrange a local boatman or the guesthouse's snorkel trip (most Felidhoo guesthouses own or charter a dhoni) for the atolls' best reefs — the Felidhu kandu channels are known for grey reef sharks, eagle rays and dense coral. Half-day trip ~£35–45 with gear, or share the boat with other guests on the island to split the cost. Afternoon: cycle the island (~£3 bike hire), visit the mangrove wetland, and join whatever island clean-up the guesthouse or local NGO runs — the original tour's beach clean is free to replicate and far more useful if you drop bags at the island waste-collection point rather than leaving them on the beach. Dinner ~£6.

🚌Local dhoni charter shared ~£20 per person

🛏Village guesthouse on Felidhoo ~£28/night

  • →Half-day reef-channel snorkel by local dhoni (~£40)
  • →Island cycle and mangrove walk
  • →Beach clean-up volunteering
~£95
Day 5

Fulidhoo and the sandbank (Bodu Mora)

Fulidhoo / Vaavu Atoll

Hop one island north to Fulidhoo, one of the prettiest inhabited islands in Vaavu — 20 minutes by local ferry/speedboat (~£10–15), or a short private dhoni hop if the schedule doesn't align. Fulidhoo has a superb house reef straight off the bikini beach where nurse sharks and turtles are common, an old mosque, and the 'Bodu Mora' coral-rock and sandbank formations the tour visits — a 10-minute boat ride with a local fisherman (~£15). Base yourself here for the night rather than the boat: guesthouses run from ~£25–35. Lunch at one of three cafés, dinner with the guesthouse family ~£6.

🚌Felidhoo → Fulidhoo local ferry/speedboat ~£12

🛏Fulidhoo guesthouse, twin with breakfast ~£30/night

  • →Fulidhoo house-reef snorkel with turtles and nurse sharks
  • →Bodu Mora sandbank dhoni trip (~£15)
  • →Old mosque and island walk
~£78
Day 6

Free-diving, diving or slow-island day on Fulidhoo

Fulidhoo

The day the original boat spends cruising back — here you use it well. Fulidhoo has two dive centres offering intro dives (~£55–65) and PADI Open Water courses if you want to add a certification over the week; certified divers get the Vaavu kandu channel dives (sharks, big schools) for ~£40–50 per dive. Non-divers: a guided reef snorkel, a kitesurf/SUP rental (~£10/hr), or simply the beach. Book any dive the day before so the boat can be scheduled. Final evening on Fulidhoo — no alcohol on local islands, so it's fresh tuna, rice and curry and a starlit beach with zero light pollution.

🚌Walking / no transport needed

🛏Fulidhoo guesthouse ~£30/night

  • →Intro dive or two-tank dive (~£55–95)
  • →Optional guided reef snorkel
  • →SUP/kayak rental
~£100
Day 7

Speedboat back to Malé and fly out

Fulidhoo → Malé

Take the morning scheduled speedboat from Fulidhoo back to Malé (about 1h15–1h45 via Maafushi, ~£30–35); guesthouses can pre-book the seat and some arrange direct transfer boats for a group. If your flight is late, store bags at the airport or the Malé ferry terminal and spend an hour in the Old Friday Mosque and fish market area, or day-room in Hulhumalé. Remember the $20-ish departure tax is included in your ticket and that local-island ferries are Friday-limited, so never book a Friday crossing on departure day — take the Thursday afternoon boat as a buffer.

🚌Fulidhoo → Malé speedboat ~£32

🛏None (overnight flight) — optional Hulhumalé guesthouse day-room ~£30

  • →Malé fish market and Old Friday Mosque
  • →Hulhumalé beach walk
~£55

Frequently asked questions

How much does Maldives Dhoni Cruise: Self-Launched Island Hopping Edition cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £735 per person for 7 days in Maldives. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,850 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £735 — a saving of roughly £1,115 (60%) per person.

How long is the Maldives trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Maldives.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a beaches, adventure, backpacker trip through Maldives, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
