Southern Madagascar & Ifaty Beach: The Self-Launched Version

Southern Madagascar & Ifaty Beach: The Self-Launched Version

8 days · Madagascar

Green Island Discovery charges £1,550

£705saved per person (45%)

No-markup version: ~£845 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched take on Green Island Discovery's 8-day RN7 south Madagascar loop — Antananarivo, the beach at Ifaty on the Ranobe lagoon, Isalo National Park, Anja Reserve's ring-tailed lemurs, and the craft towns of Ambositra and Antsirabe. The commercial version costs roughly US$1,964pp (about £1,550) and still excludes the ~US$320-340 internal flight. Doing it yourself means: booking your own Air Madagascar/Tsaradia domestic hop Tana–Toliara, taking the taxi-brousse (or a shared 4x4 with other travellers) along the RN7, joining day hikes in Isalo with local park guides, and staying in small guesthouses and bungalow hotels. Roads are rough and travel days are long — build in patience, and consider a night in Toliara or Ranohira rather than racing the clock. All figures are approximate per-person estimates for budget-to-midrange independent travel; they assume 2 sharing.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Antananarivo

Antananarivo

Land at Ivato International and get a taxi into town (agree the price first — roughly 50,000–70,000 ariary / £9–13, or use the airport shuttle if running). Madagascar visas on arrival are free for most Western nationalities for stays under 15 days, but bring USD/EUR cash for the visa desk just in case. Settle into a guesthouse in Antananarivo's Haute-Ville or Antanimena area, change some money at a bureau de change (better rates than the airport), buy a Telma or Orange SIM with data, and eat dinner at a local hotely. Book your domestic flight to Toliara tonight if you haven't already.

Day 2

Fly south to Toliara, transfer to Ifaty

Ifaty

Morning flight Antananarivo–Toliara with Tsaradia/Air Madagascar (book direct; expect roughly £130–190 one-way depending on season — the commercial tour excludes this too). From Toliara airport take a taxi-brousse or shared taxi north to Ifaty/Madiorano, about 30–45 minutes (roughly 15,000–25,000 ariary / £3–5). Check into a beach bungalow — Ifaty has plenty of cheap seafront places. Afternoon free on the sand; the reef is a short walk offshore.

🚌Domestic flight ~£160; shared taxi ~£4

🛏Beach bungalow in Ifaty (double, ~£20)

  • →Domestic flight to Toliara

Day 3

Ifaty and the Ranobe Lagoon

Ifaty

Full day at the beach. Book a local pirogue (outrigger canoe) trip on the Ranobe Lagoon directly with a fisherman on the beach — about £12–18 for a half-day including snorkelling gear. Alternatively, walk north to the spiny forest reserve for a self-guided or locally guided loop (£5–8) to see baobabs and the bizarre Didiereaceae plants. In the afternoon, relax, or ask your guesthouse about a zebu cart ride. Keep the afternoon loose — this is the 'relaxation' part of the itinerary.

🛏Beach bungalow in Ifaty (double, ~£20)

  • →Pirogue and snorkelling on Ranobe Lagoon (~£15)
  • →Spiny forest walk (~£6)

Day 4

Ifaty to Ranohira (Isalo)

Ranohira

Long transfer day. Take a shared taxi-brousse from Toliara/Ifaty towards Ranohira — it's roughly 8–10 hours on the RN7 with hairpin potholes and stops. Buses leave Toliara early in the morning; you'll pay for the full leg, around 60,000–90,000 ariary / £11–15. If you'd rather break it up, stop overnight in Ihosy. If you can find other travellers, a shared 4x4 transfer is faster and more comfortable (~£25pp for a split vehicle). In Ranohira, check into a simple lodge, sort your Isalo park permit for tomorrow (pay at the park office, ~£4 plus guide fee), and eat early.

🚌Shared taxi-brousse ~£13 (or 4x4 share ~£25)

🛏Basic lodge/bungalow in Ranohira (double, ~£18)

  • →RN7 road journey
  • →Sort Isalo park permit and guide

Day 5

Isalo National Park hike

Isalo National Park

Full day hiking in Isalo. Hire a local park guide at the entrance (mandatory, ~£12–18 shared between a couple of hikers) and walk the classic loop: the Nymph Waterfall and blue/black pools, then the natural swimming pool, finishing with the Window of Isalo viewpoint for sunset — spectacular. Bring water, sun protection and a packed lunch; there are few facilities. The hike is roughly 8 km and moderately hot; start early to avoid the midday heat. Allow ~£22 for park entry, guide and a packed lunch.

🚌On foot / short taxi to park gate

🛏Basic lodge/bungalow in Ranohira (double, ~£18)

  • →Isalo National Park guided hike
  • →Nymph Waterfall and blue pool swim
  • →Window of Isalo sunset viewpoint

Day 6

Ranohira to Fianarantsoa via Anja Reserve

Fianarantsoa

Travel onward by shared taxi-brousse to Ambalavao (2–3 hours, ~£6), then take a short tuk-tuk or moto-taxi to Anja Community Reserve (about 10 km). Anja is a community-run reserve famous for ring-tailed lemurs among granite boulders — entry plus local guide is around £7–9, and it's easily one of the best value wildlife experiences in Madagascar. Afterwards continue to Fianarantsoa by taxi-brousse (~£3). If it's a Wednesday, check out the region's zebu market in Ambalavao en route. Overnight in Fianarantsoa's old town (Haute-Ville). Optional: Antemoro paper workshops or a vineyard visit near Ambalavao, bookable locally.

🚌Taxi-brousse and local taxi ~£11

🛏Guesthouse in Fianarantsoa Haute-Ville (double, ~£18)

  • →Taxi-brousse to Ambalavao
  • →Anja Reserve lemur walk (~£8)
  • →Zebu market (Wednesdays)

Day 7

Fianarantsoa to Ambositra and Antsirabe

Antsirabe

Long but scenic bus day north along the RN7 to Ambositra (4–5 hours, ~£8), Madagascar's woodcarving capital. Stop for a couple of hours to visit the marquetry and woodcarving workshops in town (free to browse; buy directly from the craftsmen). Then continue by taxi-brousse to Antsirabe (2 hours, ~£3). Antsirabe is cooler — it's at 1,500 m — and has a pleasant colonial-era centre. Overnight in a budget hotel near the centre.

🚌Taxi-brousses ~£11

🛏Budget hotel in Antsirabe (double, ~£20)

  • →Ambositra woodcarving and marquetry workshops
  • →Bus journey along the highlands
~£50
Day 8

Antsirabe craft tour and return to Antananarivo

Antananarivo

Morning walking loop of Antsirabe: the local craftsmen making miniature bicycles and zebu-horn goods, the Ambatolampy aluminium workshops on the way out of town, and the artisan market for souvenirs. Then take a taxi-brousse back to Antananarivo (3 hours, ~£5), arriving mid-afternoon. Allow buffer time for the airport transfer and, if you're flying home tonight, the ~£11 taxi to Ivato.

🚌Taxi-brousse ~£5; airport taxi ~£11

🛏Optional final night in Antananarivo guesthouse (~£22) if not flying out same day

  • →Antsirabe craft workshops

Frequently asked questions

How much does Southern Madagascar & Ifaty Beach: The Self-Launched Version cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £845 per person for 8 days in Madagascar. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Green Island Discovery?+

Yes — Green Island Discovery charges around £1,550 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £845 — a saving of roughly £705 (45%) per person.

How long is the Madagascar trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Madagascar.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, beaches trip through Madagascar, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
