Take the morning domestic flight from Tana to the west-coast town of Morondava (book ahead with Air Madagascar). From Morondava, hop on a shared taxi-brousse or hire a private 4x4 for the ~3hr dirt-road drive to Kirindy Forest, passing the legendary Avenue of the Baobabs en route — those fat-trunked giants some 1,000 years old. In the evening, book a local guide at your lodge for a night walk in the private reserve, searching for several of the eight lemur species that live here.

Rent a bike in Antsirabe and follow the same gentle ~35km loop the group tour uses: from the busy town centre out through residential quarters and open countryside, along a dirt road to Lake Andraikiba and back past rice paddies, brick-making areas and vegetable fields. Spend the day deep in this World Heritage rainforest with a mandatory local park guide — essential for locating the flagship species. A long ~8hr drive south toward Isalo National Park.
