Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched version of Explore!'s 8-day walking week linking Lake Garda's northern shore with the Prosecco hills around Valdobbiadene. You'll base yourself in Torbole/Nago on Lake Garda for the first half and in Bassano del Grappa for the second, hiking the classic routes yourself (Monte Baldo ridge, the Old Ponale Road, the Alta Via del Tabacco, Prosecco vineyard trails), booking cable cars, ferries and tastings directly, and using Italy's excellent local buses and trains (Trentino Guest Card, Verona–Bassano rail line) instead of a private coach. Costs are rough budget-traveller estimates in GBP, excluding flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Verona → Lake Garda (Torbole/Nago)

Torbole sul Garda / Nago

Fly or take the train into Verona (Verona Porta Nuova is easiest by rail; the airport has a shuttle bus to the station, ~£5). Catch the regional train Verona–Rovereto (~£5, 1h) then local bus 305 or the Trentino 'Bici & Bus' service up to Torbole/Nago (~£2.50). Check into a lakeside hostel or family-run guesthouse in Nago (cheaper than Torbole waterfront). Afternoon: warm-up walk on the Busatte–Tempesta trail from Torbole — about 8 km, 2.5 hrs, ~420 m of up-and-down on stone steps above the lake. Pick up a Trentino Guest Card from your accommodation (often free with your stay, gives free local buses in Trentino). Supermarket picnic dinner or a €12 pizza in Torbole.

Monte Baldo Cable Car & Ridge Walk

Malcesine / Monte Baldo

Self-launch the classic Monte Baldo day: take the local bus (or the Trentino Guest Card shuttle) from Torbole to Malcesine (~£2.50, 30 min). Buy the Funivia Monte Baldo cable car ticket on the day or online in advance (~£24 return, more in high season). Ride up to Tratto Spino (1,760 m) and walk the waymarked ridge path (Sentiero del Ventrar or the easier panoramic loop, 2-4 hrs) with huge views over the lake. Note: the descent from Monte Baldo is genuinely steep and hard on the knees — pick a shorter descent, or ride the cable car down. Return to Malcesine and choose either the bus or the ferry back to Torbole (~£5, 30 min). Evening: lakefront aperitivo (~£5).

From Riva, join the Old Ponale Road Path — the dramatic cliffside route carved into the rock above the lake (2 hrs, free, no ticket needed). Continue via Pregasina and the trail over to Lake Ledro, then walk the shore path to Pieve di Ledro, home of the small but excellent Palafitte (pile-dwelling) museum (~£4). Bus back from Pieve di Ledro via Riva to Torbole using the Trentino Guest Card or a €3 ticket. Packed lunch from a Riva bakery (£6).

Verona / Soave / Bassano del Grappa

Check out and take the bus to Rovereto then the regional train to Verona (~£8, 1.5 hrs). Store bags at Verona Porta Nuova (€5) and spend 3-4 hrs exploring on foot for free: Piazza Bra, the Arena, Ponte Pietra and the view from Castel San Pietro. Afternoon: train or bus to Soave (~£3, 30 min) and book a direct winery tasting in Soave Classico country — Cantina di Soave or Suavia, most charge £10-15 for a flight of whites. Then train Soave/San Bonifacio → Vicenza → Bassano del Grappa (~£8, 1.5 hrs). Check into a guesthouse or the Bassano hostel. Rail note: the Verona–Bassano through-train runs a few times a day (~£8, 2 hrs) if you'd rather go direct.

Alta Via del Tabacco (Tobacco High Route)

Campolungo / Bassano del Grappa

Bus from Bassano to Campolungo or Covolo (~£2, 20 min) and walk the Alta Via del Tabacco — a beautifully waymarked 20 km route along the wooded ridge of the Brenta/Valstagna 'canal', through old tobacco-drying villages and hamlets. It's easy-gradient but long: split it and walk the central Covolo–Valstagna section (~12 km, 4 hrs) with a stop for water and a €10 panino lunch. Descend to Valstagna and take the local bus back to Bassano. Bring 2L of water, sun cream and cash — village bars are the only refreshments.

Optional Day Trip to Venice

Venice

Cheap day trip on the Veneto regional rail network: Bassano del Grappa → Castelfranco Veneto → Venezia Mestre/Santa Lucia (~£8 each way, 1.5-2 hrs). In Venice, skip the €20 vaporetto day pass if you're fit — walk the lanes from Santa Lucia to San Marco, Rialto and the northern sestieri and only buy single vaporetto rides (~€9.50 each) when needed. Or buy a 24h ACTV pass (~£20) if you want to add Murano and Burano in the afternoon. Cheap cicchetti lunch standing at a bacaro (~£10). Last trains back to Bassano run until around 21:00 — check times on Trenitalia the day before.

Book a winery visit and Prosecco Superiore tasting directly in advance (many family cantine charge £12-18, often with cheese and salami). Take in the panoramic viewpoints on the Cartizze hill. Bus back to Bassano in the late afternoon; eat at a Bassano osteria and try the local bigoli or baccalà (£15).

Frequently asked questions

How much does Walking Lake Garda and the Prosecco Hills — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £790 per person for 8 days in Lake Garda & the Prosecco Hills, Italy. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Explore!?+

Yes — Explore! charges around £1,450 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £790 — a saving of roughly £660 (46%) per person.

How long is the Lake Garda & the Prosecco Hills, Italy trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Lake Garda & the Prosecco Hills, Italy.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a hiking, slow-travel, foodie trip through Lake Garda & the Prosecco Hills, Italy, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
