No-markup version: ~£485 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 6-day Nairobi–Tsavo–Watamu–Mombasa route, done independently. Ride the famous Nairobi–Mombasa "Iron Snake" railway (now the SGR Madaraka Express) to Voi, base yourself in a budget lodge near Tsavo East and join shared day safari drives with local operators, then continue by train and matatu to the Indian Ocean coast for Gedi ruins, a Swahili cooking class and a dhow sunset sail. You book everything yourself — train tickets on the SGR app or at the station, safari drives through a Voi operator, and cooking/dhow experiences direct with Watamu hosts — for roughly a third of the tour price. Costs are approximate backpacker/mid-range rates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Nairobi — Nairobi National Park or Giraffe Centre

Nairobi

Land at JKIA and take an Uber/Bolt or airport shuttle to a hostel or budget hotel in Westlands, Kilimani or the city centre (Bolt from the airport is roughly £10-14; the official airport taxi is closer to £18). If you arrive early enough, do a cheap self-organised intro to Nairobi: the Giraffe Centre in Karen (KSh 1,500 entry, ~£9) and the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage viewing hour, which must be booked online in advance. Otherwise keep it simple — a supermarket run, a Kenyan SIM (Safaricom tourist SIM ~£3 with data), and dinner at a local nyama choma or ugali spot in Kilimani. Book your SGR train ticket online in advance for tomorrow (Nairobi Terminus to Voi, ~£9-14 in economy, 4-5 hours).

Day 2

The Iron Snake: SGR train to Voi, afternoon safari in Tsavo East

Tsavo East National Park / Voi

Be at Nairobi Terminus (Syokimau) about an hour before departure. The Madaraka Express — the modern successor to the colonial 'Iron Snake' railway the Maasai, Kikuyu, Kamba and Kalenjin prophecy spoke of — runs twice daily and takes about 4-5 hours to Voi in economy class (~£9-14). Buy snacks at the station for the ride. On arrival in Voi, a pre-arranged local safari operator (booked a week ahead by email/WhatsApp — Voi has several small outfits running day drives) picks you up in a shared 4x4 Land Cruiser for a late-afternoon game drive into Tsavo East National Park, entering via the Voi gate. Fares for a shared day drive with park fees typically run £60-90 per person; park entry for non-residents is US$52 (~£41) per 24 hours. Look for the famous red-dust elephants rolling in the red soil, plus lions, giraffes and dik-dik. Dinner at your lodge on the edge of the park.

Day 3

Sunrise safari in Tsavo East, free afternoon

Tsavo East National Park / Voi

Early start — out at 6am with the same local operator for a half-day game drive in Tsavo East, the best light and best wildlife window. Head to the Aruba Dam / Galana River areas where elephant and lion concentrations are highest. Back at the lodge by lunchtime to nap by the pool. In the afternoon, either rest, or self-book an optional late drive through your Voi operator (usually £50-70 including park entry, cheaper if your 24-hour park ticket is still valid). Pre-book your evening meal at the lodge; the area is not walkable for restaurants. Ask the operator to arrange your transfer to Voi SGR station the following morning.

Day 4

Voi to Watamu via Mombasa, Gedi Ruins and coastal cooking class

Voi → Watamu

Take the SGR train south from Voi to Mombasa Terminus at Miritini (~£5-8, about 1.5-2 hours — book ahead). From Miritini, a Bolt to Mombasa town or straight to the Likoni/Changamwe matatu stage costs £3-6. Take a matatu or shared shuttle to Watamu (~2.5-3 hours, £3-5) or negotiate a private taxi/ride for ~£25-30 if you want to stop en route. Stop at the Gedi Ruins (Arabuko-Sokoke forest edge, near Watamu) — a Swahili stone town abandoned in the 17th century, entry ~KSh 500-1,000 (~£3-6); a guide at the gate costs a small tip and is worth it. Check into a guesthouse or small hotel near Watamu Beach. In the evening, do a coastal Swahili cooking class — several Watamu guesthouses and women's cooperatives run 2-3 hour classes with market shopping, coconut cooking and dinner for £20-30, bookable directly or via GetYourGuide.

Day 5

Watamu Marine Park — snorkelling, Mida Creek and dhow sunset

Watamu

Full free day on the coast. Start with a snorkelling or glass-bottom boat trip into the Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve — book directly with a licensed boatman at Turtle Bay or the Watamu beach jetty (£20-30 including gear and marine park fee; whale sharks peak between October and March, so seasonal). You can also visit one of the local turtle conservation projects (Local Ocean Conservation / Watamu Turtle Watch) for a donation. In the afternoon, walk or tuk-tuk to Mida Creek for a boardwalk and mangrove/sandflat wander at low tide (~£3-5 entry, tuk-tuk £2-3). At sunset, join a dhow cruise out of Watamu or Mida Creek — book direct with a boat owner or via GetYourGuide for roughly £25-40 including drinks and snacks, versus the tour's £75 option. Dinner at a beach shack in Watamu (fish and chips, coconut curry, ~£6-9).

🚌Tuk-tuk around Watamu (~£2-5)

🛏Beach guesthouse or budget hotel in Watamu (~£18-28)

Day 6

Watamu to Mombasa — Fort Jesus, Old Town and depart

Watamu → Mombasa

Take a morning matatu or shared shuttle from Watamu back to Mombasa (~2.5 hours, £3-5) or split a private taxi (£25-30). With a late afternoon or evening flight, spend a few hours in Mombasa's Old Town — Fort Jesus (entry ~KSh 1,200, ~£7, bookable on-site), the Old Town spice-market lanes, and a Swahili lunch at one of the small Old Town cafes (~£5-7). Allow at least 2 hours before your flight for the transfer to Moi International Airport (Bolt ~£6-10). If you'd rather run the route in reverse — Mombasa to Nairobi — the SGR leaves Mombasa Terminus in the afternoon and takes about 6 hours.

🚌Matatu Watamu–Mombasa (~£4); Bolt to Moi International Airport (~£8)

🛏None (departure day) — optional extra night in Mombasa ~£20-30 if you prefer a slower exit

  • →Fort Jesus and Old Town walk
  • →Spice market browsing
  • →Optional extra night in Mombasa

Frequently asked questions

How much does Wildlife & Coastal Wonders of Kenya: Tsavo to Watamu (Self-Launched) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £485 per person for 6 days in Kenya. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,290 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £485 — a saving of roughly £805 (62%) per person.

How long is the Kenya trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Kenya.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, beaches trip through Kenya, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
