Self-Launched Best of Kenya & Tanzania Safari: Maasai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro
12 days · Kenya & Tanzania
Africa Venture Safaris charges £2,600
No-markup version: ~£1,335 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of the classic 12-day Kenya–Tanzania camping safari loop from Nairobi: the Great Rift Valley, Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Amboseli under Kilimanjaro, then across the Namanga border to Tarangire, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Instead of a fully guided group tour you book shared/public camp safaris locally (or join a 3-4 day camping safari in each country), ride matatus and shuttles between parks, and camp or stay in budget guesthouses at local rates. Note: the operator's price excludes park fees (~USD 750–980 pp), which you will also pay separately — budget accordingly. All costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP; park fees are the single biggest line item and rise annually.
Day-by-day
Nairobi to Maasai Mara via the Great Rift Valley
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Start early from Nairobi. Public option: matatu/shuttle from Nairobi's Railway Station or Afya Centre to Narok (~£6, 3–4 hrs), then a shared 4x4 taxi into the Mara conservancy (~£10–15). More practical for solo travellers: join a locally booked 3-day budget camping safari from Nairobi (~£180–250 pp including a pop-top van, driver-guide, camp and most meals) which collects you from your hostel. Stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint near Mai Mahiu for photos, arrive at camp (Lenchada-style semi-permanent tented camp, dorms/self-contained tents) late afternoon. If you drive yourself you can't self-drive inside the reserve without a licensed KPSGA guide, so a shared safari van is the realistic option.
🚌Shuttle Nairobi–Narok ~£6 + shared 4x4 ~£12, or join a local 3-day camping safari
🛏Budget tented camp / dorm tent near the Mara gate (~£12–18 pp)

Maasai Mara, Kenya
Sunrise and afternoon game drives with a packed picnic lunch at a river bend looking for lion, cheetah, elephant and — in Jul–Oct — the wildebeest migration crossings on the Mara River. Book your drives the previous evening through the camp; shared vehicles with 6–8 people keep costs down. Optional extra: a Maasai village visit (~USD 15) arranged at the gate, and hot-air balloon flights (~USD 450–480) if you want the splurge — cheapest to arrange direct with the camp rather than a Nairobi agency.

Overnight in a cheap guesthouse in Arusha town (~£10–14 pp). Spend the evening comparing local operators for the Tanzanian leg — the reliable KINAPA-licensed 3-day Serengeti/Ngorongoro camping safari can be fixed at the Arusha tourist office or directly with operators on Sokoine Road for ~£300–400 pp including park fees.

Full day in Tarangire, ~2 hrs from Arusha, famous for big elephant herds around the baobabs and the Tarangire River. Park fee ~£45 + vehicle. Camp at a public site like Seronera or Nguchiro (~£12–15 pp) — basic facilities but lions within earshot. Park fee ~£55/day per person.

Nairobi, Kenya
The cheapest way back is the daily public shuttle Arusha–Nairobi (Riverside Shuttle or Impala, ~£20–25, 6–7 hrs, morning departure). Premium private transfers are ~USD 200 if you want door-to-door. Arrive Nairobi in the afternoon; if your flight leaves early hours of the following morning, book a cheap Nairobi hostel near the airport (~£12–18 pp) rather than paying for an overnight transfer. Add one buffer night if you can — cross-border delays happen.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Best of Kenya & Tanzania Safari: Maasai Mara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,335 per person for 12 days in Kenya & Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Africa Venture Safaris?+
Yes — Africa Venture Safaris charges around £2,600 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,335 — a saving of roughly £1,265 (49%) per person.
How long is the Kenya & Tanzania trip?+
This itinerary runs 12 days, covering 12 day-by-day stops through Kenya & Tanzania.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Kenya & Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
