Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya

Fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and make your own way into the city centre — the cheapest option is the Nairobi Commuter Rail service from the airport to the city (~£1.50) or a pre-booked Uber/Bolt (~£8-10). Check into a central hostel in the Westlands or Kilimani area. Spend the afternoon visiting the National Museum of Kenya (entry ~£4) or the Bomas of Kenya cultural village (~£5). In the evening, head to Carnivore Road or Westlands for dinner — try a local nyama choma (grilled meat) joint.

Nairobi to Loita Hills – Maasai Village Experience

Loita Hills, Kenya

To replicate the Maasai village experience independently, book directly with a community-run Maasai cultural tourism programme in the Loita Hills. The Naroosura Maasai Cultural Campsite and similar community initiatives offer overnight village stays including meals and a cultural programme. To get there, take a shared matatu from Nairobi's Kencom Bus Station to Narok (~£4), then arrange a local hire vehicle or boda-boda onwards to Loita Hills (~£10-15 negotiated locally). Alternatively, join a small-group day/overnight cultural tour from Nairobi via GetYourGuide (~£40-60pp). This is remote — carry enough food from Narok's market.

🚌Matatu Nairobi to Narok (~£4), shared/private vehicle Narok to Loita Hills (~£10-15)

🛏Community campsite / Maasai homestay in Loita Hills (~£10-15 including basic meals)

Day 3

Maasai Mara – Arrive & Afternoon Game Drive

Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Travel from Loita Hills to Maasai Mara National Reserve. Take a shared matatu or negotiated vehicle from Loita to the reserve gate area (~£10-15). Check into a budget campsite just outside the reserve gate — several good options exist including Mara Leisure Camp or Osero Bush Camp. Book a shared afternoon game drive in a local 4WD directly at the gate or via your campsite (~£25-40pp for a half-day drive). Entry fees to the Maasai Mara are ~£50-60pp per day — this is the single biggest cost and non-negotiable. Book in advance via the official KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) portal.

🛏Mara Leisure Camp or Osero Bush Camp — basic camping outside the reserve (~£10-15/night)

Maasai Mara – Full Day Safari

Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Rise early for a full day game drive booked through your campsite or a local Mara-based operator. Shared game drives (6-8 people per vehicle) are significantly cheaper than private hires — ask your campsite to link you with other travellers to share costs. Look for wildebeest, lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants on the open plains. Optional sunrise hot air balloon safaris can be booked locally or pre-booked via operators like Governors' Balloon Safaris (~£350-420pp — a serious splurge but unforgettable). Return to camp for lunch and another afternoon drive.

  • Full day shared 4WD game drive — book via campsite or local operator (~£40-60pp for full day)

Maasai Mara to Lake Victoria (Musoma)

Musoma, Tanzania (Lake Victoria)

This is a long travel day — budget 10-12 hours including the Kenya-Tanzania border crossing at Isebania/Sirare. From the Mara area, take a shared vehicle or matatu to Migori (~£8), then a bus or shared taxi to the Isebania border crossing (~£3). Cross on foot, completing Tanzanian entry formalities and paying for your Tanzania visa (~£40 single entry or covered under East Africa Tourist Visa ~£75 valid for Kenya/Uganda/Tanzania). On the Tanzanian side, board a dalla-dalla (minibus) to Musoma (~£3-5). Camp on the shores of Lake Victoria at Pumzika Rest Camp or similar budget lakeside guesthouse. Stock up at the local market.

Day 6

Lake Victoria to Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

This day is the trickiest to replicate independently, as Intrepid uses a private overland truck. Your best option is to book a budget group safari departing from Arusha or Mwanza that includes Serengeti. From Musoma, take a bus or shared taxi to Mwanza (~£5-8, 2 hours). From Mwanza, either: (a) join a pre-booked budget safari from a Mwanza or Arusha operator (recommended — book in advance via companies like Ayubu Adventures, Easy Travel Tanzania, or Shoestring Safaris, ~£80-120pp/day all-inclusive in the park); or (b) take a bus to Arusha (~£15-18, 8-9 hours) as a base for booking Serengeti safaris. For this itinerary, we recommend option (a) — joining a 3-4 day budget group safari from Mwanza that covers Serengeti and Ngorongoro (~£250-350pp total). Serengeti entry fees are ~£45pp per day.

🚌Bus/shared taxi Musoma to Mwanza (~£6), then safari vehicle into Serengeti (~included in safari package)

A full day inside the Serengeti with your budget group safari. Wake before dawn for an early morning game drive when predators are most active — this is prime time for lion and cheetah sightings. Return to camp for brunch, rest during the midday heat, then head out again in the late afternoon. If you didn't take a balloon ride in the Mara, optional sunrise balloon safaris over the Serengeti can be arranged (~£400-450pp via Serengeti Balloon Safaris — book well in advance). Fall asleep to the sounds of hyenas and buffalo from your unfenced campsite.

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — in a 4WD jeep for a full morning and afternoon of game viewing on the crater floor. This is the best place in Africa to spot the critically endangered black rhino, alongside lions, elephants, hippos and flamingos. Entry fees to the NCA are ~£45pp plus a vehicle fee. Catch a dalla-dalla or shared taxi from Mto Wa Mbu to Arusha (~£3-5, 2 hours). Arusha is a lively city — good for restocking, eating well and celebrating the end of your safari leg.
