G Adventures charges £2,227

£385saved per person (17%)

No-markup version: ~£1,842 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 20-day Nairobi-to-Victoria-Falls overland camping trip, covering five countries with the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar, Lake Malawi and Victoria Falls. Instead of a Lando truck with a cook and CEO, you'll use public buses, shared shuttles, the Azam ferry and locally-booked safari operators, staying in hostels, guesthouses and budget campsites. Costs assume independent booking of budget safari vehicles in Arusha (group-shared) and standard hostel dorms/basic twin rooms — figures are approximate and exclude international flights, visas and travel insurance.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya

Land at Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA) and take an airport taxi or the No. 34 matatu/bus into the city centre (~KSh 1,500-2,500 / £10-15 for a taxi). Nairobi isn't a city to wander after dark — stay central, use taxis and keep valuables in the hostel safe. Apply online for your Kenya eTA before you fly. Optional evening: dinner at a hostel rooftop or a Carnivore-style meat feast if you want the touristy version.

🚌Airport taxi ~£12

🛏Hostel dorm in Westlands or Nairobi CBD (e.g. Wildebeest Eco Camp dorm or similar, £12-18)

  • →Settle in, SIM card (Safaricom) ~£3
  • →Optional Nairobi National Museum ~£2-5
  • →Optional Karen Blixen Museum
~£38
Day 2

Nairobi to Arusha

Arusha, Tanzania

Take a morning shuttle bus across the Namanga border to Arusha — several companies (e.g. Impala Shuttle, Riverside) run direct, roughly 6-7 hours plus border formalities, ~£20-28. Have your Tanzania e-visa and yellow fever certificate ready at Namanga. You'll see Kilimanjaro's summit if the sky is clear. Book your Serengeti/Ngorongoro safari this evening — shop around the Arusha agencies and ask for a shared-vehicle (joining) rate to cut costs.

🚌Cross-border shuttle ~£24

🛏Arusha backpackers hostel, dorm (£10-15)

  • →Namanga border crossing
  • →Book 4-day Serengeti/Ngorongoro group safari in Arusha ~£320-420 incl. park fees

Day 3

Arusha into the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Your locally-booked shared safari departs early in a pop-top 4x4 Land Cruiser. Drive via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Naabi Hill Gate into the Serengeti, game-driving as you go — golden plains, acacia, and plenty of zebra, wildebeest and giraffe. Camp inside the park at a public campsite (basic: no electricity, simple toilets, bring a torch and warm layer).

🛏Public campsite in Serengeti (own tent or safari-operator tent — included in safari price)

  • →Serengeti game drives
  • →Sunset at camp
~£30
Day 4

Serengeti morning safari to Ngorongoro rim

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

Dawn game drive — the best wildlife light of the trip. Optional hot-air balloon safari in the Serengeti can be booked separately (~£450-500, expensive but legendary). Break camp and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim to camp at Simba campsite with views into the caldera.

  • →Optional Serengeti balloon safari
  • →Crater rim sunset

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater safari, back to Arusha

Bagamoyo, Tanzania

Long travel day. Take a public bus from Arusha to Dar es Salaam (Nungwi Express or similar, 9-11 hours, ~£12-15) then a local bus/dala-dala north to Bagamoyo (~£2). Head back to Dar es Salaam and catch the Azam Marine fast ferry to Zanzibar (~2 hours, ~£28-32 one way; book online in advance). Buy the mandatory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance if required. Then take a dalla-dalla or shared taxi north to the beaches of Nungwi/Kendwa for a couple of nights of swimming, sun and cheap seafood.

Full free day. Options: snorkelling or a dhow sailing trip to Mnemba Atoll (~£25-40 self-booked on the beach, cheaper than the operators' 'Safari Blue' excursion), diving at Nungwi (~£70-90), or simply swim, eat grilled fish and do nothing. Book any tour directly with the boat crews or your hostel — prices drop with negotiation and small groups.

Spice farm to Stone Town

Stone Town, Zanzibar

Take a shared taxi south via a spice farm (Jambo Spice Farm or similar, entrance ~£8-12 with tasting). Then base yourself in Stone Town and spend the afternoon lost in its alleys — the Old Fort, Freddie Mercury's house, Forodhani night market for cheap Zanzibari pizza and grilled skewers. • →Stone Town walking tour ~£8
  • →Forodhani Gardens night market

Near Morogoro / Mikumi, Tanzania

  • →Baobab landscape at sunset
~£60
Day 11

To Iringa

Iringa, Tanzania

Another long bus day west on the A104 to Iringa (~5-7 hours, ~£8-10). Iringa is a pleasantly cool highland town. Visit the Neema Crafts centre, a community project employing disabled artisans — a direct local equivalent of the operator's craft-centre stop. 🚌Bus ~£9

🛏Iringa guesthouse or hostel, basic double shared (£8-12)

  • →Neema Crafts visit
  • →Optional Isimila Stone Age site
~£35
Day 12

Cross into Malawi: to Chitimba, Lake Malawi

Chitimba, Malawi

Travel to the Songwe/Kasumulu border and cross into Malawi (most nationalities need an e-visa — sort this before you travel). From the border take a bus or shared minibus north along the lakeshore to Chitimba (~£10-15 total, allow most of the day). Sit on the beach with the mountains of Tanzania visible across the water.

🚌Bus/shared minibus via border ~£12

Day 13

Lake Malawi: Chitimba and Kande Beach

Kande Beach, Malawi

Continue south along the lakeshore to Kande Beach — the classic backpacker lakeside stop with beach bar, snorkelling and village walks. Bus south to Lilongwe (~£8) and onward to Chipata near the Zambian border (~£6), or take a direct minibus if available. Overnight in Chipata, a workaday market town. If you'd rather do South Luangwa properly, come in from Mfuwe side — see tomorrow.

Day 18

Lusaka to Livingstone

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kenya to Zimbabwe Overland: Self-Launched Safari & Camping Adventure cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,842 per person for 20 days in Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia & Zimbabwe. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,227 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,842 — a saving of roughly £385 (17%) per person.

How long is the Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia & Zimbabwe trip?+

This itinerary runs 20 days, covering 20 day-by-day stops through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia & Zimbabwe.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia & Zimbabwe, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
