5-Day Kenya Budget Camping Safari (Self-Launched 4x4 Option)

Meet your safari driver in central Nairobi (around the 680 Hotel / Muindi Mbingu St area) at 07:30–08:00. Drive northwest on the A104 through the Great Rift Valley — stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint for photos and a roadside lunch. Enter Masai Mara in the early afternoon and do a game drive en route to camp. Budget camps cluster just outside the reserve at Sekenani/Talek Gate (e.g. Miti Mingi Eco Camp, Mara Explorers, various tented camps from ~£12–20 pp half-board). Eat dinner at camp and get an early night for a full game-drive day tomorrow. Note: this is a long driving day (~5–6 hrs) — bring water and snacks for the vehicle.

Full day in the reserve with a packed picnic lunch at the Mara River — the best spot for hippos, crocs and, in season, the wildebeest crossings (Jul–Oct). Your driver-guide tracks the Big Five across the plains; early morning and late afternoon give the best sightings. Use your phone/a local SIM (Safaricom) for data — cheap and essential for booking onward legs.
