A self-launched version of Panda Experiences' 6-day Srinagar Highlights tour. You'll base yourself in Srinagar and do the classic Kashmir circuit — Dal Lake shikara rides, the Mughal gardens, the Gulmarg gondola, the Sonamarg glacier valley and Pahalgam's Betab and Aru valleys — using shared taxis and locally hired drivers instead of a private guided vehicle. Same destinations and headline experiences, but you book guesthouses/houseboats, shikara and gondola tickets yourself. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP; they exclude flights. Allow extra slack for weather, road closures and security checkpoints — and check current FCDO/India travel advice for Kashmir before booking.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Srinagar – Dal Lake shikara sunset

Srinagar

Land at Srinagar Airport (pre-arranged airport taxi ~£8, or shared taxi ~£3). Check into a Dal Lake houseboat or a budget guesthouse in Rajbagh/Dalgate (houseboat rooms £12–20/night, guesthouse £8–14). Spend the afternoon wandering Dal Lake's ghats and the floating vegetable market area — it's liveliest at dawn but good for orientation now. Book your own shikara with a registered boatman at the Nehru Park ghat (1-hour ride ~£8–12; negotiate and confirm a licensed boatman). Floating vegetable gardens and Char Chinar are the classic routes. Evening: garlicky Kashmiri wazwan at a local dhaba in Dalgate (~£3–5).

🚌Prepaid airport taxi ~£8 or shared taxi ~£3

🛏Dal Lake houseboat or Dalgate/Rajbagh budget guesthouse (£8–20/night)

  • →Airport transfer by prepaid taxi
  • →Self-booked shikara ride on Dal Lake with floating vegetable gardens

Day 2

Mughal gardens, carpet workshop and Char Chinar by shikara

Srinagar

Hire a local auto-rickshaw or shared taxi for the garden loop (~£10–14 half day). Start early at Shalimar Bagh — the largest Mughal garden, best in morning light. Walk 15 minutes to Nishat Bagh for lake-facing terraces, then take an auto to Chashme Shahi for the spring-fed garden. Entrance is roughly ₹24–50 (~£0.30–0.50) each. Optional mid-afternoon stop at a carpet-weaving workshop in the old city — free entry, no obligation to buy; Srinagar's Government Arts Emporium is a less pressured option. Late afternoon shikara out to Char Chinar island (~1.5 hrs, ~£10–14). Dinner of lotus stem (nadru) and rogan josh in Dalgate (~£4–6).

Gulmarg gondola day trip

Gulmarg

Shared Sumo taxi from Srinagar's Tourist Reception Centre bus stand to Gulmarg, ~2 hrs each way, ~£4–6 per seat each way (a private day-hire car is ~£35–45 if you want flexibility). Pre-book or queue early for the Gondola: Phase 1 (Gulmarg–Kongdoori) ~£8–10, Phase 2 (Kongdoori–Mary Shoulder, ~3,979 m) ~£12–15 — book direct at the gondola counter or via the JKTDC site. Note the gondola closes on maintenance days and in high wind; have a backup plan of walking the meadow loop and visiting Strawberry Valley. Walk part of the Kongdoori meadow if snow conditions allow. Return to Srinagar for the night — or stay one night in a Gulmarg budget guesthouse (£12–18) if you want a slower pace.

Take a shared taxi or shared Sumo towards Sonamarg (~3 hrs, ~£5–7), asking the driver to stop at Manasbal Lake (small shikara/boat ride ~£2–4) and Kheer Bhawani Temple at Tulmulla on the way. In Sonamarg, walk the valley floor or hire a local pony to Thajiwas Glacier (negotiate ~£8–12 return, pay the guide directly; horse rates are set by the local union). Optional sledge ride on snow in season. Return to Srinagar the same evening, or overnight in Sonamarg in a basic guesthouse (£10–16) if the road is slow — check return transport times with your driver before committing.

En route stop at the Pampore saffron fields (best in late October/early November), the Avantipura ruins and the Anantnag sulphur springs. In Pahalgam hire a local union taxi for the valley circuit — Betab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are each ~₹800–1,000 per vehicle (~£8–10) sharing between passengers; per-person shared rates are cheaper. Add a pony ride to Baisaran 'Mini Switzerland' meadow if time allows (~£8–12). Back to Srinagar for the night.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg & Pahalgam – Self-Launched Kashmir Adventure cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £255 per person for 6 days in Kashmir, India. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Panda Experiences?+

Yes — Panda Experiences charges around £510 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £255 — a saving of roughly £255 (50%) per person.

How long is the Kashmir, India trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Kashmir, India.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, hiking trip through Kashmir, India, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
