A DIY version of G Adventures' 16-day Jordan–Sinai loop: Amman and As-Salt food streets, Roman Jerash, the back-door hike into Petra, a Bedouin camp under Wadi Rum's stars, floating in the Dead Sea, a wild night camping in Wadi Araba, and a hop across the Gulf of Aqaba to bohemian Dahab for the Blue Hole, St Catherine's Monastery and the Mount Sinai sunrise — all on local buses, shared taxis, jetties and public guides. No group, no CEO, same route.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Amman — settle into downtown

Amman

Fly into Queen Alia International Airport (AMM). Most nationalities can get the Jordan visa on arrival (~40 JOD, though the Jordan Pass waives it if you buy it in advance — worth it since it also covers Petra and Jerash entry). Take the Airport Express shuttle bus to the 7th Circle or a shared/taxi to downtown Amman (~8-12 JOD). Check into a hostel in the Al-Weibdeh or downtown area, then wander the Rainbow Street cafes for your first falafel and knafeh dinner.

🚌Airport Express bus + taxi (~£10)

🛏Hostel dorm or private room, downtown Amman / Al-Weibdeh (~£14/night)

  • →Rainbow Street evening wander

Day 2

Amman sights & As-Salt food tour

Amman / As-Salt

Morning at the Amman Citadel and Roman Amphitheatre (combined ticket ~3 JOD, or covered by Jordan Pass). After lunch take a local minibus or Careem taxi (~1.5 JOD / ~7 JOD) 30 minutes to the hillside town of As-Salt. Self-book a food-tasting walk through As-Salt's old town via a local operator (Klook/GetYourGuide list 2-hour As-Salt food tours from ~£18-25) or simply graze the souk and the historic Al-Salt houses yourself with a stop at a Beit Al Ward–style cooking demo (~£15). Return to Amman in the evening.

Jerash / Wadi Musa

Take a morning minibus or shared taxi from Amman's Tabarbour station to Jerash (~1-2 JOD, 1hr). The Roman site is enormous and easily self-guided with the free map/audio app — plan 3 hours walking the colonnaded cardo, Hadrian's Arch, temples and hippodrome (entry covered by Jordan Pass, otherwise ~10 JOD). Return to Amman, then catch an afternoon JETT bus or shared taxi south to Wadi Musa/Petra (~10-12 JOD, 3.5-4hrs). Settle into a guesthouse near the Petra gate.

Petra

Take a local taxi or minibus (~3-5 JOD) to Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) for 8am. Walk the ancient back-door trail through the mountains to Petra's Monastery (Ad Deir) — a stunning 2-3 hour route that spits you out at the top of Petra with far fewer crowds than the main Siq. Pack water and snacks. Descend via the main Siq to the Treasury in the late afternoon light, then exit. Entry to Petra is 50 JOD for one day or 55 JOD for two days (Jordan Pass covers 2-3 days). Evening: rooftop tea in Wadi Musa.

Use your second Petra day for a sunrise entry through the Siq — the Treasury glows orange and is nearly empty at 6am. Back to the guesthouse for breakfast, then a shared taxi or minibus to Wadi Rum village (~1hr, 15-20 JOD shared). Most Bedouin camps include a 2-4 hour 4x4 jeep tour (Lawrence's Spring, red dunes, Khazali Canyon rock inscriptions, sunsets) plus dinner and breakfast — book directly with a camp (Rum Stars, Hasan Zawaideh, or similar) from ~35-45 JOD per person all-in. Dead Sea / Madaba

Take an early JETT or shared minibus up the Dead Sea Highway (~4hrs). Stop at a public/private Dead Sea beach — Amman Beach or a hotel day pass (~15-25 JOD) gives showers, towels and mud. Float, don't swim, and don't shave your legs that morning. On the way, stop at Al Safi Kitchen near the Dead Sea for a community lunch (self-bookable, ~£12). Continue to Madaba, check in, and see St George's Church and the famous 6th-century mosaic map (~2 JOD). Dinner of Madaba's famous grilled meats.

Arrange with a small local operator (or your Wadi Rum camp's network) a 4x4 transfer, a short hike to a desert pond, and a night at a simple desert camp under the stars — expect ~45-60 JOD pp including dinner, breakfast and 4x4. Bring layers: deserts get cold at night.

Get your Egypt e-visa in advance or the visa-on-arrival QR code before travelling. Clear Egyptian immigration at Nuweiba, then take a shared minibus or taxi up the coast to Dahab (~1-1.5hrs, ~100-150 EGP / ~£2-3). Check into a beachfront guesthouse and swim.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Jordan to Egypt: Wadi Rum Camping & Dead Sea Floating (Self-Launched) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £824 per person for 16 days in Jordan & Egypt. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,390 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £824 — a saving of roughly £566 (41%) per person.

How long is the Jordan & Egypt trip?+

This itinerary runs 16 days, covering 16 day-by-day stops through Jordan & Egypt.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, hiking trip through Jordan & Egypt, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
