A self-launched version of G Adventures' "Hiking Ibiza" — six days based in Santa Eulària des Riu on Ibiza's quieter east coast, walking the island's best coastal and mountain routes independently. You'll tackle the north coast loop past Punta Moscarter lighthouse, climb Sa Talaia (the island's highest point at 475m) and descend to the famous Cala d'Hort with views of Es Vedrà, and finish with the rugged cliff circuit around Na Xamena / Es Portixol. All three headline walks are waymarked or easy to follow with free GPS apps (Wikiloc, Komoot, AllTrails) and are reachable by regular public buses rather than a private vehicle. You keep a full free day for Formentera, a bike hire, or a beach day. Ibiza's nightlife is there if you want it, but so is a surprisingly wild, empty island.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Santa Eulària des Riu

Santa Eulària des Riu

Land at Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and take the public Sagalés bus L24 direct to Santa Eulària des Riu — roughly €4 and about 35-40 minutes, running hourly through the day. Check into a budget guesthouse or hostel in or just off the town centre (aim for something within 10 minutes' walk of the bus station and seafront promenade). Spend the late afternoon orienting yourself: walk the palm-lined promenade, pick up a free island bus map, and download Wikiloc or Komoot for the week's trails. Eat dinner at a local tapas bar away from the marina — a menú del día or a few raciones will set you back £12-15. Buy trail snacks and water for tomorrow at a supermarket (Eroski or Mercadona) rather than paying beach-bar prices.

🚌Sagalés bus L24 from Ibiza Airport to Santa Eulària (~€4). Local buses around town ~€1.50-2 per trip.

Day 2

North coast loop: Portinatx to Moscarter lighthouse

Portinatx / Punta Moscarter

Catch the early bus from Santa Eulària to Portinatx in the far north of the island — there's no single direct line, so change at Sant Joan de Labritja or Ibiza Town depending on the timetable (journey 1-1.5 hrs, ~€3-5 total). From Portinatx follow the coastal path north past Cala d'en Serra with its turquoise water, out to the striking red-and-white striped Punta Moscarter lighthouse — the tallest on the Balearics. Loop inland over Puig d'en Rei (311m) for sweeping north-coast views, then back down to the village. This is roughly 12-14km with some rocky, uneven stretches and little shade — start by 9am, carry 2+ litres of water and sunscreen. Finish with a swim at Portinatx's Cala Xarraca or S'Arenal Petit, then bus back to Santa Eulària in the late afternoon. Evening free.

🚌Public bus Santa Eulària → Portinatx (change at Sant Joan or Ibiza Town), ~€3-5 each way

Day 3

Sa Talaia summit and Cala d'Hort

Sant Josep de sa Talaia / Cala d'Hort

Bus to Sant Josep de sa Talaia (change in Ibiza Town; ~1 hr, ~€4). From the village pick up the marked trail to Sa Talaia, Ibiza's highest point at 475m — a steady climb through pine and scrub with a summit platform giving 360° views over the whole island. Descend on the western side through forest towards the coast and follow the path down to Cala d'Hort, the beach with the classic view across turquoise water to the brooding rock of Es Vedrà. The full walk is around 12-14km. The beach has loungers for hire and a handful of restaurants (the seafood paella at the chiringuitos is worth it, ~£15-20), or bring a picnic. Bus back to Santa Eulària via Sant Josep or Ibiza Town in the evening — check last-bus times before you set off and have a taxi number as backup (~€35 back to Santa Eulària).

Day 4

Free day: Formentera, bike hire or beach

Santa Eulària des Riu / Formentera

Your open day. The best-value option is Formentera: take the bus or a cheap taxi to Ibiza Town port and book a return ferry with Balearia or Trasmapi (fast ferry ~30 mins, roughly £35-45 return booked online in advance). On Formentera hire a bike or e-bike (~£12-18/day) and ride the flat, car-light lanes between Platja de Ses Illetes, Cala Saona and the lighthouses at Cap de Barbaria — this is the DIY version of the operator's optional Formentera cycling excursion. Alternatively stay local: rent a bike in Santa Eulària and ride the coastal path to Es Canar and Cala Nova (~£10-15), or simply take the bus to Cala Llonga or Aguas Blancas for a beach day with a book. If you want a taste of Ibiza's famous nightlife, the quieter east-coast bars and beach clubs are on your doorstep; Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni are a cheap late bus or ~€30 taxi away.

Day 5

Na Xamena and Es Portixol coastal circuit

Na Xamena / Es Portixol

Bus north-west towards Sant Miquel de Balansat / Na Xamena (change at Sant Joan or Ibiza Town; ~1 hr, ~€4). From near the Na Xamena cliffs pick up the circular coastal route around Es Portixol — a rugged, cliff-hugging path over rock and scrub with big drops and views across to the Illa d'es Bosc and the wild north-west shoreline. It's roughly 8-11km with steep, exposed sections and is the most demanding footing of the week; good shoes and a head for heights are essential. There are no facilities on route, so carry all your water and food. Afterwards, bus back towards Sant Miquel or Sant Antoni for a late lunch, then return to Santa Eulària for a final swim, some last-minute shopping on the Carrer Sant Jaume, and a relaxed dinner.

🚌Public buses Santa Eulària → Na Xamena / Sant Miquel and return (~€8 total)

🛏Budget guesthouse or hostel in Santa Eulària des Riu

  • →Na Xamena–Es Portixol circular coastal walk

Day 6

Departure

Santa Eulària des Riu / Ibiza Airport

Check out and take the Sagalés L24 bus back to Ibiza Airport (~€4, 35-40 mins) with time to spare before your flight — the bus runs regularly from early morning, but confirm the first departure the night before if you have an early flight. If your flight is late, leave bags at the guesthouse and squeeze in one last coastal walk or breakfast on the promenade.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Hiking Ibiza: Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £505 per person for 6 days in Ibiza, Spain. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £895 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £505 — a saving of roughly £390 (44%) per person.

How long is the Ibiza, Spain trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Ibiza, Spain.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a hiking, adventure, beaches trip through Ibiza, Spain, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
