This self-launched version of Much Better Adventures' popular High Tatras winter weekend takes you through the same stunning alpine trails — frozen lakes, snow-dusted pine forests, thermal baths — but at a fraction of the cost. You'll organise your own transfer from Kraków, book a family-run guesthouse in Stara Lesna, hire a local mountain guide independently, and soak in the same thermal baths. The High Tatras are surprisingly accessible for self-launched travellers: trails are well-marked, local guides are available to book directly, and accommodation in the area is excellent value. Estimates below are per person and approximate.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Into the High Tatras

Kraków → Stara Lesna, Slovakia

Fly into Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK). From the airport, take the direct train into Kraków city centre (17 mins, ~£2), then catch a FlixBus or RegioJet coach from Kraków towards Poprad in Slovakia — journeys run daily, take roughly 2.5–3 hours and cost around £10–15. From Poprad, local buses run to Stara Lesna and the broader Tatras resort towns (around £2). Alternatively, shared minibuses (called 'taxi-busy') connect Poprad to the Tatras villages cheaply. Check into your guesthouse — Penzion Lomnicky and Vila Linda in Stara Lesna both offer great value en-suite rooms and are popular with hikers. Spend the evening exploring the village, grab a traditional Slovak dinner at a local restaurant (goulash, bryndzové halušky), and rest up for the hikes ahead.

Day 2

Guided Hike to the Green Lake

Stara Lesna & High Tatras backcountry

Today you'll hike to the stunning Green Lake (Zelené pleso) at 1,545m — a vivid turquoise alpine lake that looks utterly magical under a blanket of winter snow. The route is approximately 16km with 700m elevation gain and takes around 6 hours. In winter conditions, crampons and an ice axe may be needed — hiring a local certified mountain guide is strongly recommended and is straightforward to arrange. Book a licensed guide through the Association of Slovak Mountain Guides (www.horyinfo.sk) or via GetYourGuide — expect to pay around £40–60pp for a full-day guided hike. Crampons and poles can be rented locally in Tatranská Lomnica or Stara Lesna for around £8–12/day. After the hike, unwind in the sauna and jacuzzi facilities at your hotel or at the nearby Aquapark in Tatranská Štrba.

🚌Walk from guesthouse to trailhead or short taxi (~£3–5)

🛏Penzion Lomnicky or Vila Linda, Stara Lesna

  • Full-day guided hike to Green Lake (Zelené pleso) — 16km, ~6hrs, 700m ascent
  • Book a licensed UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guide via www.horyinfo.sk or GetYourGuide (~£40–60pp)
  • Rent crampons and trekking poles locally (~£8–12/day from sport shops in Tatranská Lomnica)
  • Post-hike sauna and jacuzzi at your guesthouse or nearby spa facility (~£5–10)

Day 3

Winter Hike to Velické Lake & Thermal Baths

High Tatras — Velická Valley

A second full day of guided winter hiking, this time into the Velická Valley to reach Velické Lake — a quieter, more remote route through hushed snow-covered pine forests and dramatic mountain scenery. The hike is approximately 13km with 500m of ascent and takes about 6 hours. Your guide from yesterday can be booked for a second day, or you can arrange a different local guide for variety. After the hike, the highlight of the day is a soak in the natural thermal baths. The Thermal Park in Vrbov (around 20 minutes by local bus from Stara Lesna) is excellent — entry costs roughly £8–12 and includes access to outdoor and indoor thermal pools, steam rooms and wellness facilities. Bus connections are regular from the Tatras villages.

🚌Walk/taxi to trailhead; local bus to Vrbov for thermal baths (~£2 each way)

🛏Penzion Lomnicky or Vila Linda, Stara Lesna

Day 4

Morning Hike Through Mengusovská Valley, Then Home

Lake Štrbské Pleso → Lake Popradské → Kraków

A shorter final morning hike before heading home. Start at the beautiful Lake Štrbské Pleso — one of the most iconic spots in the High Tatras — and hike through the jaw-dropping Mengusovská Valley to the glacial Lake Popradské, approximately 10km with 300m ascent (~4 hours). This route is well-marked and can be done independently without a guide in reasonable winter conditions, though hiring your guide for a final half-day (~£20–30pp) is worth considering. After the hike, catch a local bus or taxi-bus back to Poprad and board a RegioJet or FlixBus coach back to Kraków Airport (allow 3–3.5 hours for the journey). Book a flight departing no earlier than 17:30 to be safe.

🚌Local bus/taxi-bus from trailhead to Poprad; RegioJet/FlixBus coach to Kraków Airport

🛏Check out of guesthouse before morning hike

  • Morning hike: Lake Štrbské Pleso to Lake Popradské via Mengusovská Valley — 10km, ~4hrs, 300m ascent
  • Option to self-navigate (trail well-marked in good conditions) or book guide for a half-day (~£20–30pp)
  • Local bus or taxi-bus from Štrbské Pleso back to Poprad (~£2–4)
  • RegioJet or FlixBus coach from Poprad to Kraków Airport (~£10–15, ~3hrs)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Winter Hiking in Slovakia's High Tatras Mountains cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £295 per person for 4 days in High Tatras, Slovakia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £549 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £295 — a saving of roughly £254 (46%) per person.

How long is the High Tatras, Slovakia trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through High Tatras, Slovakia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a hiking, adventure, culture trip through High Tatras, Slovakia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
