Today you cross your first border into Honduras. The most practical route is a shared tourist shuttle from Antigua direct to Copán Ruinas — these run most mornings and include the border crossing at El Florido (~£25-30, ~6-7 hrs). Copán is a charming colonial town with terracotta-roofed white houses, great restaurants, and some of the world's most important Mayan ruins right on its doorstep. Stroll the pretty centre in the evening, try local Honduran chocolate (the Mayans first cultivated cocoa here around 900 AD) and settle into a café to watch the world go by.

Suchitoto is often called the cultural capital of El Salvador — a cobbled gem of a colonial town with brightly painted buildings, artisan galleries and a lively street food scene. A long travel day as you cross into Nicaragua and reach the city of León. Take a bus from La Libertad to San Salvador, then an international bus or series of local buses via the Honduras border and into Nicaragua (~10-12 hrs total, ~£20-28). León is one of Central America's most authentic and unfiltered cities — a student town with revolutionary murals, colonial architecture and an electric nightlife. On arrival, take an evening walk through the central park, past the cathedral (the largest in Central America) and through the local market.
