A 5-day self-launched version of the G Adventures Roamies "Greece Escape" route: Corfu's old town and beaches, the clifftop monasteries of Meteora, the ruins of Delphi and a final night in Athens. Hostel-based, done entirely on public buses and one cheap intercity coach, with self-bookable site tickets instead of a group CEO. Same ground covered, a fraction of the tour price. All costs approximate.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Corfu — old town wander and beach time

Corfu

Fly into Corfu (CFU) and take local bus line 15 into town (~£2) or the airport bus to San Rocco Square for onward connections. Check into a central hostel in Corfu Town, then spend the afternoon walking the UNESCO-listed old town: the Liston arcade, the Venetian fortress (€6), the Campiello alleys and a sunset drink on the New Fortress walls. Cross to the beach at Kontokali or Glyfada by local bus if you want a swim. Buy your bus ticket for tomorrow at the Green Bus (KTEL) station. In the evening join a hostel walking tour or meet fellow travellers in the common room.

Corfu to Kalambaka — clifftop monasteries of Meteora

Kalambaka / Meteora

Long travel day: take the KTEL Green Bus from Corfu to Kalambaka/Meteora (via Ioannina and the ferry or Igoumenitsa route; roughly 7-8 hours, ~£30-38 one way, book a day ahead as seats fill). Arrive in Kalambaka, drop bags at your hostel, and climb or take the local bus up to the monasteries. Six monasteries cling to the rock pillars — the Great Meteoron and Varlaam are the biggest. Each charges about €3 entry, dress code applies (shoulders and knees covered, skirts provided at the door). Catch sunset from one of the viewpoints, then eat in Kalambaka and swap photos at the hostel.

Kalambaka to Delphi — sanctuary of Apollo

Delphi

Take the morning KTEL bus from Kalambaka toward Lamia and connect onward to Delphi (Amfissa/Delphi stop) — roughly 5-6 hours total with one change, ~£20-26. Or, if timings are awkward, go via Livadeia. Check into a guesthouse in modern Delphi village and walk 10 minutes to the archaeological site. Buy a combined ticket at the gate (~£10) covering both the site and the Delphi Museum. Walk the Sacred Way past the Treasury of the Athenians to the Temple of Apollo and the theatre, then spend an hour in the museum with the Charioteer. Dinner on the village main street with valley views.

Athens

Morning bus from Delphi to Athens (KTEL, about 3 hours, ~£13-16) arriving at Liosion station; take the metro into the centre (~£1.20). Drop bags at a hostel in Psirri or Monastiraki, then do a free self-guided highlights walk: Syntagma, the changing of the guard, the National Garden, Hadrian's Arch, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Plaka and the slopes of the Acropolis. Skip the paid Acropolis entry today if you're short on time — pre-book a timed slot for tomorrow morning instead. In the evening visit Shedia Home café, the social-enterprise café on Kolokotroni Street that supports people experiencing homelessness (the original tour's G for Good stop) — a coffee or drink is ~£3-4. Finish with souvlaki and a rooftop bar in Psirri.

Grab a freddo espresso in Plaka and head to the airport on metro line 3 (~£8) or the X95 express bus (~£5). Stay on if you want to keep going — cheap ferries to the islands leave from Piraeus.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Greece Escape: Corfu, Meteora, Delphi & Athens — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £295 per person for 5 days in Greece. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £700 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £295 — a saving of roughly £405 (58%) per person.

How long is the Greece trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Greece.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, backpacker, budget trip through Greece, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
