Athens, Syros & Mykonos — 7 Days (Self-Launched)

Travel Zone charges £1,450

£880saved per person (61%)

No-markup version: ~£570 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Travel Zone's 7-day Athens–Syros–Mykonos island hop. Rather than 4-star hotels, airport transfers and pre-booked ferries bundled together, you'll build the same route yourself: two nights in Athens near Plaka/Syntagma, two nights on laid-back Syros in Ermoupoli, two nights on Mykonos, then back to Athens. Ferries are bookable direct with Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways or Seajets, activities via GetYourGuide or straight from the sites, and you stay in hostels, guesthouses and small family-run hotels. Note: midsummer Mykonos prices spike hard — book well ahead or shift to June/September for the biggest savings.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Athens — Plaka & Acropolis views

Athens

Land at Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) and take the Metro Line 3 straight into town (~€9 / £8, 40–50 min to Syntagma) or the X95 express bus (~€5.50). Check into a hostel or small guesthouse in Plaka, Monastiraki or Koukaki — Koukaki is cheapest and walkable to the Acropolis Museum. Spend the late afternoon wandering Plaka's lanes, then climb Philopappos Hill for the classic free sunset view of the Acropolis. Eat at a taverna in Monastiraki (souvlaki ~€4, full meal with wine ~€15–20). If you want the Acropolis first thing, buy a timed GetYourGuide or official e-ticket (~€20–30) for tomorrow morning now.

🚌Metro Line 3 from airport to Syntagma, ~£8

🛏Hostel dorm or budget guesthouse in Plaka/Monastiraki/Koukaki (~£25–40)

  • →Philopappos Hill sunset
  • →Plaka & Monastiraki evening wander
  • →Taverna dinner
~£75
Day 2

Athens highlights, then ferry to Syros

Athens → Syros

Get to the Acropolis early (opens 08:00, ~€20–30 with timed entry) before the heat and crowds, then walk down through the Ancient Agora or catch the Acropolis Museum (~€15, or £10 combined ticket options). Around midday, head to Piraeus on Metro Line 1 (~€1.40) and catch an afternoon Blue Star Ferries or Hellenic Seaways ferry to Syros — roughly 3.5–4.5 hours, ~€40–45 one way. Book direct on the ferry company sites a few days out, and always take the slow conventional ferry if you're prone to seasickness (the high-speed catamarans are bumpier in meltemi winds). Arrive in Ermoupoli, check into a guesthouse near Miaouli Square, and eat at a waterfront taverna.

🚌Metro to Piraeus ~£1.50; Blue Star ferry Piraeus–Syros ~£40

🛏Guesthouse or budget hotel in Ermoupoli, Syros (~£30–45)

  • →Acropolis early entry
  • →Acropolis Museum
  • →Ferry crossing to Syros
  • →Ermoupoli waterfront dinner
~£100
Day 3

Syros — Ermoupoli, Ano Syros & beaches

Syros

Syros is the affordable, characterful counterweight to Mykonos. Morning in Ermoupoli: the marble-paved Miaouli Square, the Orthodox Agios Nikolaos church and the Catholic St George's Cathedral on the hill. Wander up through the Cycladic stairways to Ano Syros for views over the bay, then take a local KTEL bus (€1.80–2.50) to one of the beaches — Vari and Kini are easiest, Kini has great sunset tavernas, Galissas and Finikas are sandier. Rent a sunbed-free spot and swim. Return in the evening for a cheap dinner in Ermoupoli (loukoumades and grilled fish are the local staples). Consider a half-day boat trip to uninhabited Gyaros or a kayak tour via a local operator if you want an activity add-on.

🚌Local KTEL bus to beaches, ~£2 each way

🛏Guesthouse or budget hotel in Ermoupoli, Syros (~£30–45)

  • →Miaouli Square & Agios Nikolaos
  • →St George's Cathedral
  • →Ano Syros climb
  • →Vari, Kini or Galissas beach
~£60
Day 4

Syros to Mykonos — Hora & Little Venice

Mykonos

Morning ferry from Syros to Mykonos with Seajets or Golden Star — only about 30–45 minutes, ~€25–35. From the new port, take the local KTEL bus into Hora (€2) or stay in a guesthouse in the bus-connected areas of Fabrika or Platis Gialos if central Mykonos prices are too steep. Afternoon: get deliberately lost in the whitewashed backstreets, find the windmills at Kato Mili, and walk the curve into Little Venice and Alefkandra for sunset. Eat away from Matoyanni Street — the tavernas in Fabrika and around Gryparis Street are half the price for the same food.

🚌Seajets ferry Syros–Mykonos ~£30; port bus ~£2

🛏Budget guesthouse, studio or hostel in Mykonos Hora/Fabrika/Platis Gialos (~£50–80)

  • →Hora backstreets
  • →Kato Mili windmills
  • →Little Venice sunset
  • →Alefkandra waterfront
~£105
Day 5

Mykonos — beaches, Delos or a boat day

Mykonos

Pick your Mykonos day. Buffer option: local bus to Elia, Agrari or Paraga (€2–3) for a beach day — bring your own snacks and water and pick a free section of sand rather than a €50 club sunbed. History option: the Delos archaeological site is a 30-minute boat from the old port (~€22 return incl. site entry via a licensed operator or GetYourGuide) — one of Greece's best ancient sites and the reason many travellers rate Mykonos above the beach alone. Evening back in Hora: browse the small Aegean Maritime Museum and Lena's House (€2–4 each), grab a gyros (~€5) and watch the sunset again.

🚌Local KTEL buses, ~£3–5; optional Delos boat ~£20

🛏Budget guesthouse, studio or hostel in Mykonos Hora/Fabrika/Platis Gialos (~£50–80)

  • →Elia or Paraga beach
  • →Optional Delos day trip
  • →Aegean Maritime Museum
  • →Gyros dinner in Hora
~£100
Day 6

Mykonos back to Athens

Mykonos → Athens

Take a morning high-speed ferry from Mykonos to Piraeus (Seajets or Golden Star, ~2.5–3.5 hrs, ~€50–60) or the slower Blue Star (~5 hrs, ~€45). Book in advance — this route sells out in peak season. Metro from Piraeus back to central Athens, check into a hostel in Monastiraki or Koukaki. Late afternoon: the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, or free entry to the National Archaeological Museum depending on the day. Final dinner in Psyri with live rembetiko if you can find a bar with a set on.

🚌Ferry Mykonos–Piraeus ~£55; Metro ~£1.50

🛏Hostel dorm or budget guesthouse in Athens (~£25–40)

  • →Ferry back to Athens
  • →Ancient Agora / Temple of Zeus
  • →Psyri evening & live music bar
~£105
Day 7

Athens departure

Athens

Easy last morning: coffee and a frappé in Plaka, a final walk through the Acropolis Museum shop or the Central Market for olive oil and honey to take home. Travel to the airport 3 hours before an international flight — Metro Line 3 from Monastiraki/Syntagma (~€9, ~45 min) is cheapest and reliable, or the X95 bus from Syntagma (~€5.50). If your flight is late, a luggage locker at Syntagma or Monastiraki (€3–5) lets you leave bags and keep exploring.

🚌Metro Line 3 to airport ~£8

🛏None (checkout day)

  • →Plaka coffee
  • →Central Market shopping
  • →Airport transfer
~£25

Frequently asked questions

How much does Athens, Syros & Mykonos — 7 Days (Self-Launched) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £570 per person for 7 days in Greece. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Travel Zone?+

Yes — Travel Zone charges around £1,450 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £570 — a saving of roughly £880 (61%) per person.

How long is the Greece trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Greece.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, beaches, island-hopping trip through Greece, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
