Self-Launched Galapagos Wildlife Adventure: Quito, San Cristobal & Santa Cruz

8 days · Galapagos Islands & Ecuador

Much Better Adventures charges £5,000

£3,473saved per person (69%)

No-markup version: ~£1,527 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An 8-day self-launched version of Much Better Adventures' premium Galapagos wildlife trip — same islands, same wildlife (Kicker Rock snorkelling, sea lions, giant tortoises, petrel conservation, uninhabited-island day trip) — but booked independently: budget guesthouses and hostels instead of 4-star boutiques, local water taxis and scheduled speedboats instead of private transfers, and self-bookable day tours with local operators (many of which are the very same licensed naturalist guides). Expect bunk or twin rooms, box lunches on boat days and plenty of ceviche in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and Puerto Ayora. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP; Galapagos park fees ($200) and the $20 transit card are unavoidable and included. Note: to snorkel with wildlife at Kicker Rock and visit uninhabited islands, Galapagos National Park rules require a licensed naturalist guide — day tours are the cheap, legal route, and they're still far below tour-operator pricing.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Quito and overnight in the Andean foothills

Quito / Valle de Pifo

Land at Mariscal Sucre (UIO) and take an airport taxi or the cheaper shared airport shuttle (~£8) to a guesthouse in Pifo or Tumbaco, 15–20 minutes from the airport and at ~2,600m so take it easy. Budget hostels and casas around Pifo run £15–25 for a private twin or £10 for a dorm; a cheap lunch of loco de papa (potato soup) or hornado sets you back £4–6. Spend the afternoon walking local lanes birdwatching — the valley is great for hummingbirds — or pay a few dollars for a self-guided wander in the grounds of a nearby hacienda reserve. Early dinner and early night; you'll fly at dawn-ish tomorrow. Book your Galapagos flight in advance and pre-register/pay the $20 Transit Control Card online before travel.

Day 2

Fly to San Cristobal: Frigatebird Hill and Punta Carola

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal

Fly Quito–San Cristobal (via Guayaquil, ~2.5–3.5 hrs). At San Cristobal airport pay the $200 Galapagos National Park fee (card accepted) and the $20 transit card if not prepaid — budget ~£170 for both, they are unavoidable. Walk 10 minutes into town and check into a hostal or guesthouse near the malecón (£15–25 twin). Free afternoon: visit the free Interpretation Centre (Centro de Interpretación), walk 15 minutes up Cerro Tijeretas (Frigatebird Hill) for the coastal viewpoint, then 20 minutes down to Punta Carola beach for your first swim with curious sea lions. Evening stroll on the boardwalk, sea lion spotting at Playa de Oro, dinner of ceviche and grilled fish (£8–12).

Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) snorkel day tour

Kicker Rock, San Cristobal

Book a Kicker Rock day tour with a local licensed operator in town or in advance via GetYourGuide (roughly £90–120 including guide, boat, gear and lunch — the same GNP-licensed boats the tour operators use). Depart ~8am, get a safety briefing, then two snorkel sessions at Leon Dormido looking for Galapagos sharks, rays, turtles, sea lions and the occasional hammerhead. Lunch aboard, then stop at a beach such as Cerro Brujo or Manglecito for sea lions, marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies. Wetsuits hire ~£10–15 extra (worth it July–November). Back in town by late afternoon — sunset beers on the malecón.

If you'd rather save £100, skip Kicker Rock and spend the day independently: snorkel from Playa Mann (£5 mask hire), walk the Punta Carretas/Tijeretas trail, and take a $2 taxi to La Loberia for sea lion pups and marine iguanas. Not the same as Kicker Rock but genuinely rewarding.

  • →Free snorkelling at Playa Mann
  • →La Loberia wildlife walk
~£25
Day 4

Highlands conservation: Los Petreles Reserve & El Junco

San Cristobal highlands

Take a local bus or collectivo taxi (~£5–8, 45 mins) up to the San Cristobal highlands. Contact Fundacion Jocotoco directly before your trip to ask about volunteer/visit options at Los Petreles Reserve (they sometimes host small groups for planting days); otherwise visit the reserve viewpoint and spend time at nearby El Junco crater lake — a freshwater caldera with frigatebirds — and the Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado giant tortoise breeding centre (free–£5). Local highlands lunch £5–8. Ask your hostal to arrange a shared taxi back down. This is a DIY version of the operator's conservation visit — you won't get the same structured session, but you'll see the same habitat and can make a donation to Jocotoco.

🚌Local bus / shared taxi (collectivo) ~£8

🛏Hostal in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (~£20)

  • →Los Petreles Reserve area walk / conservation enquiry
  • →El Junco crater lake

Day 5

Speedboat to Santa Cruz, kayak and Charles Darwin Research Station

Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz

Early speedboat from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to Santa Cruz (~07:00, 2 hrs, ~£30–35 one way — book a day ahead at any agency; take motion sickness tablets, the crossing is bumpy). Check into a hostel or guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (£18–25 twin). Rent a kayak (£10–15/hr) at Playa de los Alemanes or Playa Tortuga Bay and paddle the Punta Estrada shoreline and Canal del Amor, snorkelling among reef fish, rays and marine iguanas. In the afternoon take the $1 water taxi across Academy Bay and visit the Charles Darwin Research Station (£5 donation) to see the giant tortoise breeding programme, then stroll the fishermen's dock for pelicans and sea lions and browse the crafts market. Dinner in Puerto Ayora (£8–12).

Day 6

Uninhabited island day trip: North Seymour, Bartolome, Plaza or Santa Fe

Santa Cruz / uninhabited island

Book a full-day boat trip to an uninhabited island through a local agency in Puerto Ayora or GetYourGuide (~£130–160 including naturalist guide, boat, lunch and gear — availability depends on GNP permits and sea conditions). Transfer to the Itabaca Channel, board, and hike 2–2.5 hrs among sea lions, marine iguanas, frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies — Galapagos penguins are possible on Bartolome. Snorkel with turtles, rays and reef sharks, lunch on board, then a beach stop before returning to Santa Cruz by late afternoon. Long day, big highlight; pack sun cream, reef-safe, and a dry bag.

🚌Shared tour boat and bus transfer (included)

🛏Hostal/guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (~£22)

Day 7

Giant tortoise highlands and downhill cycling

Santa Cruz highlands

Take a local bus or shared taxi up to the Santa Cruz highlands (El Cascajo/El Chato area, ~£5). Visit a tortoise ranch such as El Chato or Rancho Primicias (£5–10 entry, includes rubber boots and coffee) to see giant tortoises in the wild, plus Darwin's finches, mockingbirds and yellow warblers; several ranches offer native-tree planting if you ask ahead. Rent a mountain bike in Puerto Ayora (~£15–20/day) or arrange a bike-with-transfer package to ride the 11km mostly-downhill route back through the highlands. Finish with free explorations of the lava tubes near Bellavista (small fee) or a self-guided walk at the Los Gemelos twin craters. Farewell dinner in Puerto Ayora — splurge on a seafood tasting plate (£15–20).

🚌Local bus/shared taxi + bike hire ~£25

🛏Hostal/guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (~£22)

  • →Giant tortoise ranch visit
  • →Downhill cycling in the highlands

Remember GNP staff will check you out and inspect bags for bio-security. Fly Baltra–Quito (~£110–150) and, if connecting to an international flight the same day, leave at least 4 hours and collect luggage to re-check. Optional extra night in Quito from ~£15–20.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Galapagos Wildlife Adventure: Quito, San Cristobal & Santa Cruz cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,527 per person for 8 days in Galapagos Islands & Ecuador. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £5,000 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,527 — a saving of roughly £3,473 (69%) per person.

How long is the Galapagos Islands & Ecuador trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Galapagos Islands & Ecuador.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, hiking trip through Galapagos Islands & Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
