Galapagos on a Shoestring: Self-Launched Island Hopping
9 days · Galapagos Islands & Ecuador
Intrepid Travel charges £2,100
No-markup version: ~£1,420 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of Intrepid's 9-day Galapagos Discovery: Quito, Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristóbal, hopping between islands by public speedboat and booking wildlife excursions locally at the docks. You lose the tour leader and the group, but you keep the wildlife and save roughly £1,000. Note that Galapagos park fees, the TCT transit card and the flights to the islands are unavoidable fixed costs — this is one of the harder trips to cut costs on, so the savings come mostly from accommodation, food and the markup on included activities. Rough costs only; Galapagos prices are in USD and change with the season.

Pay the Galapagos TCT transit card ($20) at the Quito airport and the national park entry ($200, cash USD) on arrival. Take the free airline shuttle to the Itabaca Channel, the public ferry across (~$1), then a $5 shared pickup to Puerto Ayora. Once checked in, grab a shared taxi or the 30-minute walk to the highlands for giant tortoise sightings at one of the roadside ranches or the El Chato reserve (~$5–10 entry), then walk the 2.5 km trail to Tortuga Bay in the late afternoon.

Afternoon walking tour of Puerto Villamil: the Flamingo Lagoon on the edge of town is free, and the Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre at the end of the boardwalk is free to enter. Sunbathe or swim at Playa Grande, then eat cheap at one of the family-run comedores.

Sierra Negra volcano hike and shoreline snorkelling
Isabela
Do the Sierra Negra hike independently but on a registered guide — national park rules require a guide on the trail. Book at the park office or any tour office in town the day before; the tour usually runs $40–55 and the 17 km round trip to the Volcán Chico crater field takes 6–7 hours on lava rock. Alternative half-day: take a boat to Las Tintoreras ($45–50) for penguins, whitetip sharks and sea lions. In the afternoon, walk to Concha y Perla and snorkel for free, or rent gear ($5) and a wetsuit ($15) in town.

Entry is free and the tortoise-breeding corrals and Lonesome George's enclosure take about an hour. Spend the afternoon at the Pelican Bay fish market watching sea lions and pelicans fight over scraps, or rent a bike and ride to Playa Ratonera. Note: Traveller Bay and other Santa Cruz beaches are free but beaches on the north of the island need boat access.

Kicker Rock (León Dormido) snorkel boat trip
San Cristóbal
Book the Kicker Rock snorkel day directly with one of the dive shops on the main street the day before — the day trip runs about $100–130 including guide, gear, lunch and the boat, versus the tour-operator markup. Usually a 7–8 am departure, snorkel through the channel with hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, rays and sea lions, and spot frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. You're back around 2 pm. Evening options: walk to Frigate Bird Hill for sunset (free) or a cheap dinner of encebollado at the market.

Afternoon free in Quito: riding the Teleférico cable car ($10) or visiting the Basílica del Voto Nacional ($5). Cheap eats in La Mariscal or a set almuerzo in the old town for $5–6.
🚌Taxi to airport ~£2, flight back to Quito (in round-trip total)
🛏Hostel dorm in Quito — ~£15

Depart Quito
Quito
Morning at the local Mercado Central for fruit and a plate of breakfast, or a last coffee in the Centro Histórico. Airport bus or taxi out for your flight. If you have a late flight, a half-day trip to the Papallacta hot springs (~$25 by local bus plus entry ~$9) is doable but tight — better to add an extra night rather than rush.
🚌Airport bus ~£7
🛏—
- →Mercado Central visit (free)

Frequently asked questions
How much does Galapagos on a Shoestring: Self-Launched Island Hopping cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,420 per person for 9 days in Galapagos Islands & Ecuador. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Intrepid Travel?+
Yes — Intrepid Travel charges around £2,100 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,420 — a saving of roughly £680 (32%) per person.
How long is the Galapagos Islands & Ecuador trip?+
This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Galapagos Islands & Ecuador.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Galapagos Islands & Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
