£385saved per person (43%)

No-markup version: ~£510 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of Ancient Egypt Tours' 7-day Cairo & Nile Cruise package. You'll see the same headline sights — Giza pyramids and Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Philae, Kom Ombo, Edfu, the Valley of the Kings and Karnak — but booked yourself: budget guesthouse/hostel stays in Cairo and Luxor, the overnight sleeper train (or a cheap flight) instead of a guided transfer, a local train/bus between Aswan and Luxor, and shared or small-group day tours via GetYourGuide/Klook. Skip the 5* river cruise and instead sleep in a Luxor West Bank guesthouse with rooftop Nile views, taking a short felucca sail and an optional budget day cruise. The result is the same route at roughly a third of the tour price. All costs are approximate per-person estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Cairo — Giza at sunset

Cairo / Giza

Land at Cairo International and take the airport bus or a ride-hailing app (Uber/Careem, ~£5-8) to a budget guesthouse in Giza or downtown Cairo (e.g. hostels/guesthouses around £10-15/night with breakfast). Drop bags, then walk or take a cheap microbus to the Giza plateau perimeter for a free sunset view of the pyramids from the street-side viewpoints (no ticket needed for the outside view; be polite but firm with touts). Evening: cheap koshari dinner in downtown (~£2-3) and plan tomorrow's GEM ticket online. Note: entry visa-on-arrival ~£20-30 depending on nationality — budget for it here if not pre-purchased.

🚌Airport bus or Uber/Careem from Cairo Airport (~£5-8)

🛏Budget guesthouse/hostel, Giza or downtown Cairo (~£10-15)

  • →Giza plateau sunset viewpoint (free)
  • →Koshari dinner downtown

Day 2

Pyramids, Sphinx & the Grand Egyptian Museum

Giza / Cairo

Early start (7-8am) to beat the heat and crowds at Giza: buy the site ticket on-site or online (~£10-13); entry inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu or Khafre is an extra optional ticket (~£8-12). Walk the plateau taking in Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure pyramids, the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple — a self-guided walk with a guidebook/app works well, or a small-group GetYourGuide tour (~£20-30) if you want narration. Midday: rest and lunch. Afternoon: Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) — book the timed ticket online in advance (~£20-25 including the Tutankhamun galleries; the Khufu solar boat museum is included in the GEM complex). Evening: walk the GEM plaza or head back downtown for street food. Overnight same guesthouse.

🛏Budget guesthouse/hostel, Giza or downtown Cairo (~£10-15)

Day 3

Overnight sleeper train to Aswan — Philae & High Dam

Cairo → Aswan

Morning: check out and either take a cheap daytime train to Aswan or, better for time, the evening Watania sleeper train (single cabin ~£45-60 one-way incl. dinner and breakfast; book online weeks ahead as it sells out — cheapest option is the reclining-seat daytime train at ~£10-15 but it takes ~12-14 hours). If you take the sleeper, you arrive in Aswan early on Day 4 — swap the order of Days 3 and 4 so the Aswan sights happen on arrival. Alternatively fly Cairo-Aswan on a budget carrier (~£35-50) if sleeper cabins are full. Arrive Aswan, check into a budget guesthouse/hostel near the Corniche or on Elephantine Island (~£10-15). Afternoon: High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk (tickets ~£3-5 combined), then boat across to Philae Temple on Agilkia Island (~£6-8 entry + ~£3-5 shared boat). Optional evening Sound & Light show at Philae (~£15). Overnight Aswan.

Day 4

Aswan to Kom Ombo & Edfu, onward to Luxor

Aswan → Kom Ombo → Edfu → Luxor

Take the morning train north from Aswan (or a shared minibus, ~£3-5) and hop off or arrange a stop at Kom Ombo (~£5 entry) — the twin temple of Sobek and Haroeris right on the riverbank. Continue ~1 hour to Edfu for the beautifully preserved Temple of Horus (~£5-6 entry; a tuk-tuk from the station is ~£2). Then catch a northbound train from Edfu to Luxor (~£3-6, 1.5-2 hrs) — trains stop at Edfu but confirm times locally, or take a shared minibus. Arrive Luxor, check into a West Bank guesthouse with rooftop Nile views (~£10-18/night with breakfast). Evening: cheap dinner and a mint tea on the roof. A practical alternative is a budget 1-night felucca/cruise combo from Aswan to Luxor sold locally (~£40-70) if you want the river experience without the 5* price.

🚌Train/minibus Aswan–Kom Ombo–Edfu–Luxor (~£8-14 total)

🛏West Bank guesthouse, Luxor (~£10-18)

  • →Temple of Kom Ombo
  • →Temple of Edfu (Horus Temple)

Day 5

West Bank: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Memnon & Karnak

Luxor

Get up early and cross the Nile by public ferry (~£0.50) to the West Bank. Buy the Valley of the Kings ticket on-site (~£10-13 for 3 tombs; tut-ankh-amun's tomb is a separate add-on ~£10). Ride a shared microbus or rent a bicycle (~£2-4/day) between sites. Continue to the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut (~£5-6) and the Colossi of Memnon (free road stop). Lunch at a local West Bank spot (~£3). Afternoon: cross back and explore Karnak Temple complex (~£8-10) — go late afternoon for softer light and crowds. Optional: hot air balloon at sunrise over the West Bank, bookable via GetYourGuide (~£50-65) — highly recommended and far cheaper than tour add-ons. Evening: felucca sail at sunset (~£5-8 shared).

  • →Valley of the Kings (3 tombs)

Luxor to Cairo by sleeper train

Luxor → Cairo

Relaxed morning: Luxor Museum (~£5) or a walk through Luxor Temple (~£6) if you didn't see it yesterday. Cheap local lunch, then board the evening Watania sleeper train back to Cairo (~£45-60 incl. dinner and breakfast, single cabin) — or a budget flight Luxor–Cairo (~£40-60) if you'd rather arrive fresh. On board, you get dinner served as the train rolls out and breakfast before arrival, just like the operator's version, for a fraction of the cruise-plus-transfer cost.

🚌Watania overnight sleeper train Luxor–Cairo (~£45-60) or budget flight (~£40-60)

🛏Sleeper train cabin (~£45-60, included in transport below)

If you have a late flight, add the free-to-cheap Coptic Cairo walk (Hanging Church) or a walk along the Nile Corniche. Take the airport bus or Uber to Cairo Airport for departure. Costs here cover food and local transport only.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Cairo & Nile Valley: Pyramids, GEM and Felucca-Style Nile Journey cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £510 per person for 7 days in Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Luxor). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Ancient Egypt Tours?+

Yes — Ancient Egypt Tours charges around £895 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £510 — a saving of roughly £385 (43%) per person.

How long is the Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Luxor) trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Luxor).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, budget, adventure trip through Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Luxor), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
