G Adventures charges £4,200

No-markup version: ~£1,130 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 12-day small-ship cruise from Guayaquil to Cartagena, rebuilt for independent travellers using local buses, domestic flights, ferries and island water taxis instead of the G Expedition. You'll still see Isla de la Plata's boobies and frigatebirds, the Darién jungle and an Emberá community, the Pearl Islands, the Panama Canal's Miraflores Locks, the San Blás Islands and Capurganá — but you'll book each piece yourself through local operators, hostels and Guna-run island cabins. Note: this is a genuinely more adventurous, DIY version of the route — some legs (particularly San Blás and Capurganá) require flexibility, cash, and patience with local boat schedules, and the Darién village visit must be arranged with a vetted local guide from the Panama side. Costs below are rough backpacker/budget estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Guayaquil

Guayaquil, Ecuador

Land at José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport and take a local taxi or the Metrovía bus into the centre (~£4). Settle into a hostel in the regenerated Puerto Santa Ana or Las Peñas riverside district — safe, walkable and lined with cafés. Spend the evening strolling the Malecón 2000 waterfront and eating ceviche at a local market stall. Book tomorrow's bus to Salinas at the Terminal Terrestre this evening or online with CLP/Rutas del Pacífico.

🚌Airport taxi or Metrovía bus (~£4)

🛏Hostel or budget hotel in Puerto Santa Ana / Centro (~£18)

  • →Malecón 2000 riverfront walk
  • →Las Peñas colourful hillside neighbourhood
  • →Ceviche dinner at Mercado del Río

Day 2

Guayaquil to Salinas via Cocoa Country

Salinas, Ecuador

Take a morning CLP intercity bus from Guayaquil Terminal Terrestre to Salinas (~3 hrs, £4-6). Rather than the tour's private bus and hacienda lunch, book a short cacao farm visit independently — several farms along the Santa Elena route accept drop-in visits, or arrange one via your Salinas hostel for ~£15 including tasting. Arrive in Salinas, a low-key Pacific beach town, and walk the malecón before an early night ahead of tomorrow's island trip.

🚌CLP bus Guayaquil–Salinas (~£5)

🛏Budget guesthouse in Salinas (~£16)

  • →Cacao hacienda visit and tasting (~£15)
  • →Salinas malecón and beach walk
~£50
Day 3

Isla de la Plata Wildlife Day

Isla de la Plata / Puerto López, Ecuador

The 'poor man's Galápagos' — the rough equivalent of the cruise's zodiac landing. Book a day boat trip a day or two ahead in Puerto López (30 min south) or via your Salinas hostel, ~£45-60 including boat, guide, snorkel gear and lunch. Expect blue- and red-footed boobies, frigatebirds and pelicans on the easy island trails. Return to the mainland by late afternoon; overnight in Puerto López for easy onward connections.

🚌Local bus Salinas–Puerto López (~£2); boat trip included

🛏Hostel or guesthouse in Puerto López (~£15)

  • →Isla de la Plata guided boat trip with wildlife walks (~£55)
  • →Snorkelling stop en route

Day 4

Pacific Coast Rest Day / Overland Toward the Border

Puerto López to Manta / Guayaquil

Replace the ship's 'day at sea' with a relaxed travel day. Morning free to swim or visit the Agua Blanca community and sulphur lagoon near Machalilla National Park (~£8 entry and local transport). In the afternoon, bus to Manta or back to Guayaquil to position for the flight to Panama. Book your Panama flight tonight for tomorrow (Guayaquil–Panama City on Copa/Wingo, ~£110-170 one-way).

🚌Local bus Puerto López–Guayaquil (~£6)

🛏Hostel near Guayaquil airport or in Manta (~£16)

  • →Agua Blanca community and lagoon walk (~£8)
  • →Beach time
~£40
Day 5

Fly to Panama City

Panama City, Panama

Fly Guayaquil to Panama City (~2 hrs) and take a local bus or taxi to a hostel in Casco Viejo or Bella Vista (~£5). Spend the afternoon in Casco Viejo — the French/colonial quarter the cruise visits — wandering the plazas, the sea wall and the ruins of Panamá Viejo. Buy groceries: San Blás and Capurganá are cash-only and simple.

🚌Domestic-route flight (~£130); metro or taxi into town (~£5)

🛏Hostel in Casco Viejo / Bella Vista (~£20)

  • →Casco Viejo walking tour (free self-guided or ~£10 tip-based guide)
  • →Panamá Viejo ruins
  • →Cinta Costera sunset walk
~£160
Day 6

Miraflores Locks & Panama Canal

Panama City

Take a local bus or Uber to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center (~£4). Entry is ~£15 including the observation deck and museum — this is the self-bookable equivalent of the tour's included locks excursion. Time your visit for late morning when ships typically transit. Afternoon: walk the Amador Causeway or book a partial canal transit boat trip if budget allows (~£45, bookable on GetYourGuide/Klook).

🚌Local bus or Uber to Miraflores (~£4)

🛏Hostel in Casco Viejo / Bella Vista (~£20)

  • →Miraflores Locks observation center and museum (~£15)
  • →Optional partial canal transit boat trip (~£45)
  • →Amador Causeway walk
~£45
Day 7

Darién Jungle & Emberá Community

Mogue River / Darién

Book a full-day Emberá village trip from Panama City through a vetted local operator (GetYourGuide or a Panama City hostel-arranged guide, ~£95-120 including 4x4 transfer, motorised canoe up the Mogue River, village visit, traditional dances and lunch). This is the independent equivalent of the cruise's Darién excursion — independent travel into the Darién is not advised, so use a local guide. Return to Panama City in the evening.

🚌4x4 transfer and canoe included in the tour price

🛏Hostel in Panama City (~£20)

  • →Emberá community visit with motorised canoe ride and traditional dance presentation (~£105)
  • →Motorised canoe up the Mogue River
~£130
Day 8

Pearl Islands

Contadora or Saboga, Pearl Islands

Take a ferry or water taxi from Panama City (Amador Causeway or Port of Balboa) to the Pearl Islands (~1.5 hrs, ~£30-40 return). Choose Contadora for easy beaches and snorkelling, or quieter Saboga for budget cabins. Snorkel gear rents locally for ~£8. Sleep on the island for a proper remote-island feel instead of the ship's anchorage.

🚌Ferry/water taxi (~£35)

🛏Beach cabin or guesthouse on Contadora/Saboga (~£30)

  • →Island ferry to the Pearl Islands (~£35 return)
  • →Snorkelling with rented gear (~£8)
  • →Beach time on Contadora
~£90
Day 9

Pearl Islands to Panama City / San Blás Prep

Panama City

Morning swim, then return to Panama City by ferry. Use the afternoon to arrange your San Blás crossing: book a 4x4 transfer plus boat to the islands for tomorrow (~£60-90 including island entry fee, ~£20 Kuna tax). Withdraw plenty of cash — there are no ATMs on the islands. Overnight near the Amador Causeway or Albrook for an early departure.

🚌Ferry (~£15 one way); 4x4 to the San Blás dock tomorrow

🛏Budget hotel in Albrook / Amador (~£22)

  • →Return ferry to Panama City
  • →San Blás tour booking and cash prep
~£55
Day 10

San Blás Islands

Guna Yala / San Blás Islands

Early 4x4 to Cartí (~3 hrs) and a water taxi to your island (~40 min). Book a basic Guna-owned cabin or hammock on a small island in advance (~£25-40 including meals). Spend the day on white sand, swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear water, and visit a Guna village and small market to learn about local life — the same experience as the cruise's included San Blás day.

🚌4x4 + water taxi (~£70)

🛏Guna-run island cabin or hammock (~£30 incl. meals)

  • →4x4 transfer and boat to San Blás (~£70 incl. entry fee)
  • →Snorkelling and beach time
  • →Guna village and local market visit
~£110
Day 11

San Blás to Capurganá, Colombia

Capurganá, Colombia

Take a morning water taxi south across the border to Capurganá (~£30-40; passport stamping happens with the Capurganá immigration officer). This Caribbean village has no roads and no cars. Walk the jungle trail to El Cielo eco-reserve and the natural pools, eat a traditional Caribbean meal with a local family, and swim off the pier. Stay in a simple hotel.

🚌Water taxi San Blás–Capurganá (~£35)

🛏Simple hotel or guesthouse in Capurganá (~£20)

  • →Cross-border water taxi to Capurganá (~£35)
  • →El Cielo eco-reserve jungle walk (~£5 entry)
  • →Local Caribbean meal

Day 12

Capurganá to Cartagena

Cartagena, Colombia

Two options for the final leg: a small-plane flight from Capurganá airstrip to Medellín and onward, or the classic backpacker route — boat to Turbo/Sapzurro then bus to Montería and on to Cartagena (~12-14 hrs, ~£25-35 total). Once in Cartagena, drop your bag and walk the walled city: the cathedral, Las Murallas and the colourful streets of Getsemaní. Trip ends here — stay a night or two to enjoy the Caribbean coast.

🚌Boat + bus combo (~£30) or small plane (~£90)

🛏Hostel in Cartagena historical centre or Getsemaní (~£20)

  • →Walled city and Getsemaní walk
  • →Las Murallas sunset

Frequently asked questions

How much does Guayaquil to Cartagena Overland & Island-Hopping Adventure (Self-Launched) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,130 per person for 12 days in Ecuador, Panama & Colombia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £4,200 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,130 — a saving of roughly £3,070 (73%) per person.

How long is the Ecuador, Panama & Colombia trip?+

This itinerary runs 12 days, covering 12 day-by-day stops through Ecuador, Panama & Colombia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, beaches, culture trip through Ecuador, Panama & Colombia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
