Ecuador Cloud Forest Self-Launched Add-On
3 days · Ecuador
Exodus charges £965
No-markup version: ~£315 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A 3-day self-launched version of Exodus's Ecuador Cloud Forest add-on. Escape Quito for the misty Tandayapa Valley, base yourself at Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge (bookable directly), and explore the reserve's trail network independently — early morning birding walks, waterfall trails, and hummingbird feeders. All transport uses public buses and shared taxis from Quito, and the whole thing costs a fraction of the guided group tour.
Day-by-day
Quito to the cloud forest — walk Bellavista trails
Tandayapa Valley / Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge
Leave Quito early from the Ofelia bus terminal and take the bus toward Nanegal via the Calacalí–La Independencia road (≈1h 30min, ~£2). From the turn-off, either walk the final stretch or grab a shared taxi/pickup to the lodge gate (~£3-5). Book Bellavista Lodge directly by email or their website — rates run roughly £60-75 a night including meals for their simple forest rooms with balconies that overlook hummingbird feeders. Settle in, then walk the lodge's marked trails on your own with the reserve's trail map: the forest changes dramatically with altitude and is thick with tanagers, hummingbirds and the occasional olinguito near the buildings. Lunch and dinner are served at the lodge. Keep an eye on the feeders at dusk.
🚌Public bus Quito–Nanegal (~£2) + shared taxi (~£4)

Dawn birding and deeper forest trails, return to Quito
Bellavista / Tandayapa Valley → Quito
Get up for the 6:30am dawn chorus — this is peak activity in the Andean birding corridor. If you want a guide, Bellavista arranges resident local guides for the morning (roughly £25-40 per person if shared; ask when booking). Alternatively take yourself out with binoculars on the upper trails before breakfast. After breakfast, hike further into the reserve — routes lead to waterfalls and quieter forest sections, so pick a longer loop for the day. Lunch at the lodge, then head back down to the road and catch the bus back to Quito (≈2h 30min, ~£3). Check into a budget hotel in the La Mariscal or Centro Histórico area.
🚌Shared taxi to road + public bus back to Quito (~£5 total)
🛏Hotel Vieja Cuba or similar budget Quito hotel, ~£45/night (La Mariscal)
- →Dawn birdwatching walk (optional guided, ~£25-40 shared, or free self-guided)
- →Longer waterfall/forest loop trail
- →Return bus to Quito (~£3)
Adventure ends in Quito

If you have time before your flight, the Centro Histórico, La Basílica and the TelefériQo cable car are all walkable or a short taxi ride (~£3-5) from La Mariscal. No onward programme is included — this is the end point of the add-on.

🛏None (onward travel)
- →Onward travel arrangements

Frequently asked questions
How much does Ecuador Cloud Forest Self-Launched Add-On cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £315 per person for 3 days in Ecuador. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Exodus?+
Yes — Exodus charges around £965 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £315 — a saving of roughly £650 (67%) per person.
How long is the Ecuador trip?+
This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Ecuador.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a wildlife, hiking, backpacker trip through Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
