10 days · Croatia, Slovenia & Italy

G Adventures charges £1,900

£1,110saved per person (58%)

No-markup version: ~£790 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched take on G Adventures' 10-day Adriatic sailing trip — but instead of a crewed yacht, you cover the same route by ferry, catamaran and bus. Start in Zadar, hop the Kvarner Gulf islands (Dugi Otok, Lošinj, Krk), cross to Istria for Rovinj and Pula's Roman amphitheatre, follow the Slovenian coast through Koper, Piran and Portorož, then finish along the Italian coast via Grado to Venice. Expect hostels and guesthouses, cheap coastal ferries, wine tasting in Istria and a lot of swim stops. Costs are rough backpacker-budget estimates in GBP and exclude flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Zadar & Old Town sunset

Zadar, Croatia

Fly or bus into Zadar and check into a hostel in or near the Old Town (Hostel Zalazak or similar, ~£22/night dorm). Spend the afternoon wandering the marble streets, the Roman forum, and the Sea Organ. Sunset at the Greeting to the Sun solar panel is genuinely one of the best free shows in Europe. Evening: cheap grilled fish and a Karlovačko at a konoba. Book your Dugi Otok ferry for tomorrow morning tonight.

Hire a bike or scooter and ride to Sakarun Beach — white sand, shallow turquoise water, and far quieter than anything on the mainland. Swim, snorkel, then eat at a family-run konoba on the water's edge.

Alternatively simply do nothing on a rocky beach with a book. Late afternoon take the ferry back toward Zadar, then a bus or ferry onward to the Kvarner islands. If connections are tight, overnight in Zadar and catch the early catamaran.

Lošinj: Mali Lošinj and its sunny harbour

Mali Lošinj, Croatia

Lošinj claims to be one of the sunniest places in the Adriatic and it's easy to believe. Arrive by catamaran, check into a hostel or sobe (private rooms) in Mali Lošinj. The old town climbing out of the sea is the postcard shot of Istria — climb the bell tower of St Euphemia for the view (~£4). Book a hostel or apartment in the old town. Wander the Temple of Augustus, the Arch of the Sergii, and the Venetian fortress. Cross into Slovenia by bus (Pula–Koper via Trieste or direct, ~3h, ~£15). Poke around Koper's Venetian old town and Praetorian Palace, then take a local bus on to Piran (~40 min, ~£4). Piran is a tiny Venetian-gothic peninsula town — climb the cathedral campanile, walk the city walls, and swim off the rocks near the lighthouse. Book a hostel or sobe in Piran's old town.

Optional detour to the Sečovlje salt pans (~£10 entry) for flamingos and traditional salt harvesting. Late afternoon bus to Trieste, Italy (~£6), and check into a hostel near the station. Then train from Cervignano or Monfalcone to Venezia Santa Lucia (~£10–12, ~1h45). Check into a hostel on the mainland at Mestre or a budget guesthouse in Cannaregio (~£30). Complete the Venice Access Fee exemption form if you're staying overnight in the city.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Adriatic Island Hop: Zadar to Venice (Self-Launched Sailing-Free Version) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £790 per person for 10 days in Croatia, Slovenia & Italy. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,900 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £790 — a saving of roughly £1,110 (58%) per person.

How long is the Croatia, Slovenia & Italy trip?+

This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Croatia, Slovenia & Italy.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, beaches, culture trip through Croatia, Slovenia & Italy, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
