Dalmatian Coast Self-Launched Island Hop: Split to Trogir
9 days · Croatia
Insight Vacations charges £3,000
No-markup version: ~£1,015 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of Insight Vacations' Dalmatian Elegance cruise — same route (Split, Hvar, Pelješac, Mljet, Dubrovnik, Korčula, Brač, Trogir) but done independently using Croatia's excellent Jadrolinija/Krilo catamaran ferries, island buses and hostels/sobas instead of a 20-40 person lower-deck cruise. You get more time on the islands, can swim whenever you like, and eat where locals eat. Book ferries a few days ahead in shoulder season (and weeks ahead in July-August), keep bags small for the ferries, and stay flexible on the Mljet and Pelješac days where buses are infrequent. Costs are rough backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP and exclude flights to/from Croatia.

Check into a soba/guesthouse above the harbour, then self-tour the Old Town: the main square, the Renaissance cathedral and its bell tower, and the stepped lanes up to Španjola Fortress (~£6 entry) for the classic view over the Pakleni Islands. Afternoon swim at Pokonji Dol or a small boat shuttle to the Pakleni Islands (~£8 return). Eat konoba-style: gregada or grilled fish with a glass of local white.

Hvar to Pelješac — Ston, oyster village and farm-to-table dinner
Pelješac Peninsula (Orebić/Trstenik)
Early catamaran Hvar Town to Korčula/Dominče, or take the Hvar–Korčula line and connect by catamaran to Orebić on Pelješac (check Krilo and Jadrolinija timetables the day before; a simpler alternative is Hvar–Split–Ploče bus which is slower). Once in Orebić or Trstenik, base up in a guesthouse. Afternoon bus or hitch-friendly ride to Ston to see the 14th-century walls (~£8 entry) and eat oysters fresh from the bay at a local shack. For the equivalent farm-to-table experience, book the Antunović estate near Potomje directly (book ahead — dinner with peka, wine and cheese tasting ~£35-45) or join a Pelješac wine-tasting at a smaller family winery for ~£20.

Pelješac to Mljet National Park
Mljet (Pomena/Polace)
Cross to Mljet by bus to Prapratno and the short Jadrolinija ferry to Sobra (~£12 ferry + £6 bus), or take the Krilo/catamaran connection via Korčula to Polače/Pomena — check timetables carefully as Mljet services are limited. Pay the national park entrance (~£18-20 including the boat to St Mary's Isle), hire a bike (~£10/day) and ride between the saltwater lakes. Take the small boat across Veliko Jezero to the 12th-century Benedictine monastery on St Mary's Isle, then swim in the lakes. Eat at a simple konoba in Pomena; night is quiet, which is the point.
🚌Pelješac–Mljet ferry/bus combo ~£18; bike hire ~£10

Dubrovnik
Morning ferry Mljet–Dubrovnik (seasonal fast boat to Gruž, ~£25) or ferry to Sobra then catamaran. Base in a hostel in Gruž or outside the walls (Placa-area hostels are double the price). Do the Old Town on foot: Onofrio's Fountain, Stradun, the Franciscan Monastery with its 1317 pharmacy, and then pick either the city walls walk (~£30 — do it early or late to dodge cruise crowds) or the cable car to Mount Srđ (~£22 return, or hike up free in about 50 minutes). Evening: cheap-ish seafood or pasta away from Stradun, then sunset drinks on the rocks at Buža.
🚌Mljet–Dubrovnik ferry/catamaran ~£25; local buses ~£2 per trip
🛏Hostel in Gruž/Old Town outskirts, dorm £22-30 (book ahead — Dubrovnik is tight in summer)

Dubrovnik to Korčula — Marco Polo's town and island wine
Korčula Town
Take the direct Krilo catamaran Dubrovnik–Korčula (~2h15, ~£25) or the Jadrolinija ferry to Vela Luka and bus to Korčula Town. Explore the fishbone-plan Old Town on foot: the Cathedral of St Mark, the Venetian town hall, and the Marco Polo house (claims vs facts are part of the fun). Book a small wine tasting at a family winery directly (Korčula has many — direct farm visits run £15-25) or try the local Pošip and Grk whites in a konoba. Afternoon: cycle or bus east to Lumbarda's sandy beaches.
🚌Dubrovnik–Korčula catamaran ~£25; walking/rental bike ~£10
🛏Guesthouse/soba in Korčula Town, £22-32 per person

Settle into a soba, then walk the pine path to Zlatni Rat beach for a swim and wander inland to Blaca Hermitage if you're up for a hot 40-minute walk or can share a taxi (~£25 split). Kitesurf-watching at Zlatni Rat, dinner of brački vitalac or fresh fish in Bol village. This day replaces the cruise's Captain's Dinner — treat yourself at a konoba instead (~£25).

Drop bags at a guesthouse and self-tour Trogir's UNESCO island Old Town: the Cathedral of St Lawrence with Master Radovan's 13th-century portal, Kamerlengo Fortress (~£5), the 15th-century Town Hall and the maze of lanes. Evening harbourside meal on the Riva, or cross the bridge to Okrug for cheaper seafood. Buy your Split airport transfer and check flight times tonight.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Dalmatian Coast Self-Launched Island Hop: Split to Trogir cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,015 per person for 9 days in Croatia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Insight Vacations?+
Yes — Insight Vacations charges around £3,000 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,015 — a saving of roughly £1,985 (66%) per person.
How long is the Croatia trip?+
This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Croatia.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, beaches trip through Croatia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
