Land at Juan Santamaría International Airport and take an official orange taxi or an Uber to your hostel/guesthouse in Barrio Amón or Barrio Escalante (roughly £8-12). Spend the afternoon acclimatising: walk the old neighbourhoods, grab a casado (rice, beans, plantain, protein) for around £5, and sort your transport for tomorrow. Buy a Kolbi or Claro SIM at the airport or a supermarket if you want data on the road. Optional evening: a free walking tour of downtown San José or a cheap night at a craft beer bar in Escalante.

Use this extra day as flex — Costa Rican transport delays are normal, and this protects your flight. Options: a day trip to the Rincón de la Vieja volcano and its mud pots (organised tour ~£70-90 but expensive; a public bus to Liberia plus a taxi to the park is much cheaper at ~£25), a turtle-nesting night tour on Playa Grande in season (Oct-Mar, ~£25), or simply a slow beach day and a cooking class. Book nothing tightly against your flight.
