A DIY version of Bucket List Group Travel's 5-day Denver–Aspen fall foliage loop, done independently by car or bus. You'll climb over Independence Pass among blazing aspens, ride the Aspen Mountain gondola, hike the Maroon Bells and Crater Lake trails, soak in Iron Mountain Hot Springs and walk the Hanging Lake boardwalk. The original is US$2,990pp (about £2,350) for a partially guided group trip; self-launching brings it to roughly £800–£950 per person including a rental car share, dorm/shared guesthouse beds and self-booked activities. Best in late September to early October for peak aspens. Costs are rough estimates.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Denver to Aspen via Independence Pass & Twin Lakes

Denver / Twin Lakes / Aspen

Collect a rental car at Denver International (DEN) — book well ahead, autumn rates run about £35–£50/day for a compact, split between 2–3 travellers. Drive west on I-70 to Twin Lakes (about 2.5 hrs). Walk the easy Grotto Trail loop from the Twin Lakes dam, then drive the short spur to Independence Lake Trailhead for a gentle lakeside hike. Continue over Independence Pass (3,687 m — check the pass is still open; it usually closes late Oct/early Nov) with constant aspen views, arriving in Aspen for a hostel or motel check-in. No car? Take the Bustang West Line from Denver's Union Station to Glenwood Springs (from ~£25) and a local RFTA bus to Aspen; you'll lose some of the pass-side stops.

🚌Rental car from DEN, ~200 km drive; fuel ~£25 share

After lunch, drive to Aspen Highlands and take the shuttle or your car to Maroon Lake. Note: between mid-June and late October you need a Maroon Bells reservation (parking or shuttle, ~£8–£12) booked online in advance. Walk the Maroon Lake Scenic Trail (easy, 1.5 km) then continue up the Crater Lake Trail (about 5.5 km return, 3–5 miles of walking as in the original). Picnic dinner back in Aspen.

Hike the Castle Creek Trail and, if legs allow, the Cathedral Lake Trail (roughly 8 km return, steady climb, easy–moderate). Afternoon: wander Snowmass Village and Buttermilk Mountain viewpoints, or just rest. Optional evening: drive back toward Maroon Bells area for stargazing in the glacier valley — it's an International Dark Sky zone, so bring a headtorch and warm layers; weather dependent, no fee.

How much does Self-Launched Colorado: Denver to Aspen Fall Foliage & Hot Springs cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £860 per person for 5 days in Colorado, USA. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Bucket List Group Travel LLC?+

How long is the Colorado, USA trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Colorado, USA.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a hiking, adventure, road-trip trip through Colorado, USA, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
