Travel to Oaxaca

Arrive in the afternoon and check into your hostel near the Zócalo. Do a self-guided walk along Macedonio Alcalá pedestrian street and around the colourful colonial centre. Spend 2-3 hours exploring the pyramids and terraces with sweeping valley views. Return to Oaxaca for lunch and spend the afternoon at the Santo Domingo Cultural Centre and the surrounding textile markets.

Palenque Ruins & Misol-Ha Waterfall

Head early to the Palenque archaeological zone before the heat and crowds build. Dating to AD 600, these Maya ruins are among the most atmospheric in Mexico — surrounded by dense jungle alive with howler monkeys and parrots. Explore the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace and the Cross Group at your own pace. In the afternoon, take a colectivo to the magnificent Misol-Ha waterfall — a 35-metre cascade you can walk behind into a cave. Cool down with a swim in the pool below.

Ask your hostel about arranging a stop or join a local shared taxi tour. Arrive in Valladolid by afternoon and explore the local market and colourful streets.

Cenote Xkeken and Samula are easily reachable by bike or trike (~£3 return), while the famous Cenote Suytun offers a magical platform in the middle of an underground lake. Rent a bike from your hostel and make a day of cycling between the cenotes. In the evening, join other travellers for dinner around the main plaza.

A full day at Semuc Champey — a series of stepped turquoise limestone pools fed by the Cahabón River, set in a deep jungle valley. Visit the Santo Tomás church where Maya and Catholic rituals blend on the steps. Then continue to Lake Atitlán — one of the world's most beautiful lakes, surrounded by three volcanoes. Base yourself in San Pedro La Laguna or San Marcos.
