A self-launched version of the popular 2-day Ban Gioc Waterfall trip from Hanoi — same waterfall, same cave, same pagoda and mountain viewpoints, but built on public/local transport and a guesthouse of your own choosing. You can do it the cheap way (sleeper bus + local xe om / hired scooter in Cao Bang) or the DIY-favourite way (overnight sleeper bus to Cao Bang, then ride the famous Cao Bang–Ban Gioc loop on a rented scooter). Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP and assume one person sharing a twin/dorm room.
Day-by-day
Hanoi → Cao Bang → Ban Gioc Waterfall & Nguom Ngao Cave
Hanoi / Cao Bang / Ban Gioc
Get an early start — the Hanoi–Cao Bang road is roughly 300km and takes 6–7 hours, which is exactly why the group tour leaves at 06:00. Book a morning sleeper or limousine bus from Hanoi's My Dinh or Gia Lam bus station (or a Hanoi Old Quarter pickup limousine van) to Cao Bang city, ~£10–14. From Cao Bang, continue ~85km to Ban Gioc: either a local bus toward Trung Khanh/Ban Gioc (~£2–3), a shared taxi/xe om (~£10–15 per vehicle), or — the classic backpacker option — rent a semi-automatic scooter in Cao Bang for ~£6–8/day and ride the spectacular karst road yourself. Drop bags at a guesthouse near Ban Gioc or in Trung Khanh. Spend the afternoon at Ban Gioc Waterfall (entry ~£1.50–2.50): walk the paths, take the bamboo raft right up to the spray (extra ~£3), and cross the marked border-steps area to the Chinese side for the unusual 'two countries at once' photo. Then head ~4km to Nguom Ngao Cave (entry ~£1.50) and walk the lit 2km route through huge limestone chambers. Dinner at your guesthouse or a local com pho/grill spot. Note: the tour's hotel dinner is replaced by whatever you choose — homestay dinners in this area are excellent value at ~£4–6.
🚌Hanoi–Cao Bang sleeper/limousine bus ~£10–14 (6–7 hrs); local bus or rented scooter Cao Bang–Ban Gioc ~£2–8
🛏Guesthouse or homestay in Ban Gioc / Trung Khanh, ~£8–14 (twin/double)
- →Ban Gioc Waterfall entry & walkways (~£2)
- →Bamboo raft close to the falls (~£3)
- →Nguom Ngao (Tiger Cave) self-guided walk (~£1.50)
- →Cross the border-marked path to the Chinese-side viewpoint
- →Village stroll and sunset over the Quay Son river
Ban Gioc Pagoda, Angel's Eye Mountain & back to Hanoi
Ban Gioc / Quang Uyen / Hanoi
Sunrise is the best light on the falls — get up early for a quiet walk before the day-trip crowds arrive. Visit Ban Gioc Pagoda on the hill above the waterfall (free or a tiny donation) for the classic elevated view over the falls and valley. Then ride or take a local bus back toward Cao Bang, detouring to 'Angel's Eye Mountain' (Nui Thung / Thung Mountain) near Quang Uyen — a karst peak with a hole through it framing the valley; entry is a few thousand dong and there's a short walk up to the viewpoint. Stop for lunch in Quang Uyen or Trung Khanh (~£3–4: noodle soup, banh cuon, or a roadside com binh dan). Return the scooter in Cao Bang, then catch an afternoon/evening sleeper bus or limousine back to Hanoi (book ahead — the last departures are usually around 19:00–21:00, arriving Hanoi after midnight; ~£10–14). If you prefer a daylight return, take an earlier afternoon bus and arrive Hanoi in the evening. From Hanoi's bus station, grab a Grab bike back to the Old Quarter (~£1.50–2).
🚌Local transport/scooter to pagoda & Angel's Eye Mountain ~£2–8; Cao Bang–Hanoi sleeper bus ~£10–14; Grab in Hanoi ~£2
🛏None included — return to Hanoi (or add a Hanoi hostel night, ~£6–12)
- →Ban Gioc Pagoda & elevated waterfall viewpoint
- →Angel's Eye Mountain (Nui Thung) viewpoint walk
- →Quang Uyen village & market stop for lunch
- →Roadside karst scenery photo stops

Is this cheaper than booking with Vietnam Travel Top?+

How long is the Cao Bang & Ban Gioc Waterfall, Vietnam trip?+
This itinerary runs 2 days, covering 2 day-by-day stops through Cao Bang & Ban Gioc Waterfall, Vietnam.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, backpacker, budget trip through Cao Bang & Ban Gioc Waterfall, Vietnam, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
