Campania Overland charges £1,190

£645saved per person (54%)

No-markup version: ~£545 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched, independent version of Campania Overland's 5-day Naples–Capri–Amalfi escape. You base yourself in a central Naples hostel or budget guesthouse, walk the historic centre yourself, take the public ferry to Capri and Anacapri, and ride the Circumvesuviana train plus the SITA bus down the Amalfi Coast to Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Everything on the original itinerary — Spaccanapoli, Santa Chiara, the Blue Grotto, Castel Sant'Elmo's terrace, the Amalfi–Maiori boat — can be booked yourself for a fraction of the tour price, with the added freedom to actually linger in the coast towns (a common complaint about the group version). Costs are approximate backpacker/mid-budget estimates in GBP, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Naples — settle in and evening passeggiata on the Lungomare

Naples

Land at Naples Capodichino (NAP) and take the Alibus shuttle to Piazza Garibaldi (~€5) or the Linea 1 metro to your hostel in the historic centre (€1.30). Check into a central hostel or budget guesthouse around Spaccanapoli / Piazza Bellini — this is the same neighbourhood the group tour uses and it puts nearly all the sights within walking distance. In the late afternoon do the independent Lungomare Caracciolo walk from the tour: castle-side promenade, Vesuvius views across the bay, and a stop for pizza fritta or a cuoppo of street food for dinner. Load the ANM app and buy a TIC (Trentalia/Unico Campania) 3-day pass if you plan to use metro and buses a lot.

🚌Alibus shuttle from NAP airport to Piazza Garibaldi, ~£4.50; metro/bus within the city ~£1.20 per ride

🛏Central Naples hostel dorm or budget guesthouse, ~£22/night

  • →Alibus airport shuttle to city centre
  • →Self-guided walk along Lungomare Caracciolo
  • →Street food dinner in the Quartieri Spagnoli
~£55
Day 2

Naples historic centre on foot — Spaccanapoli, Santa Chiara & Castel Sant'Elmo

Naples

Recreate the guided city day entirely on your own; the centre is compact and every landmark is walkable or a short metro hop away. Start at Piazza del Gesù Nuovo and the Church of Gesù Nuovo (free), then follow Spaccanapoli past baroque chapels toward the Santa Chiara monumental complex and its Majolica Cloister (entrance ~€6, includes the cloister garden). Continue to Naples Cathedral (Duomo, free) to see the Chapel of San Gennaro. If you want a storytelling layer, a 2-hour small-group Naples walking tour on GetYourGuide costs roughly £20-25 — otherwise a €10 audio guide app works fine. After lunch walk Via Toledo through the Spanish Quarters, duck into Galleria Umberto I, cross to Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace exteriors, then take the Chiaia funicular (~€1.20) up to Castel Sant'Elmo for the panoramic terrace (~€5) — or simply use the free terrace at the Certosa di San Martino courtyard. Finish with the Posillipo panoramic viewpoint: bus 140 or R7 to the belvedere, sunset over the bay, then a cheap trattoria dinner back in the centre.

🚌Walking plus metro/funicular hops, ~£4 total; optional 24h Unico Campania ticket ~£4.50

🛏Central Naples hostel dorm or budget guesthouse, ~£22/night

  • →Piazza del Gesù Nuovo and Church of Gesù Nuovo

Day 3

Capri & Anacapri by public ferry — Blue Grotto and Monte Solaro

Capri / Anacapri

Leave early and book the fast ferry yourself — Caremar, NLG or SNAV run from Molo Beverello (Naples) to Capri Marina Grande in 45-50 minutes, roughly €40-46 return; booking on the operator site or at the ticket office the day before is usually enough outside peak August. On arrival take the public bus from Marina Grande up to Anacapri (~€2.20) and the chairlift to Monte Solaro for the island's best view (~€14 return). The Blue Grotto is reachable via the small shared rowing boats from Marina Grande or Anacapri stairs (~€18 including the boat and grotto entrance) — it only runs when the sea is calm, so keep it flexible and swap in the Faraglioni boat loop (~€22) if the grotto is closed. Ride the internal minibus between Anacapri and Capri town centre (~€2.20 each way), wander Via Krupp and the Gardens of Augustus (~€2), then take an evening ferry back to Naples. Eat a packed lunch from a Naples deli — Capri prices are brutal.

🚌Ferry Molo Beverello–Capri ~£36 return; island buses ~£8; chairlift ~£12

🛏Central Naples hostel dorm or budget guesthouse, ~£22/night

  • →Public ferry Naples–Capri return
  • →Anacapri and Monte Solaro chairlift
  • →Blue Grotto boat visit (weather permitting)
  • →Capri town, Via Krupp and Gardens of Augustus
  • →Island minibus between Anacapri and Capri
~£140
Day 4

Amalfi Coast day — Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Maiori & Ravello

Sorrento / Positano / Amalfi / Ravello

This is the big day, and doing it yourself means you can actually stay longer in the towns. Take the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi to Sorrento (~€5, 70 min, watch your bags). From Sorrento, the SITA SUD bus toward Amalfi (the coastal bus, buy a 24h Costiera SITA ticket ~€10 at a tabacchi) drops you at Positano for the classic photo stop; a second bus continues to Amalfi. In Amalfi explore the historic centre and Duomo steps on foot, then take the shared boat excursion Amalfi–Maiori (~€10-12 one way, boats run roughly April-October) — a much more scenic route than the road. From Amalfi catch the local bus up to Ravello (~€2.50, 25 min) for Villa Rufolo gardens (~€7) and the terraces above the coast. Return to Naples by SITA bus to Sorrento and the Circumvesuviana train, or, in summer, a direct ferry Amalfi–Naples (~€20) if you want to skip the traffic. Start by 7:30am to make it all work; the last coastal bus back is early evening.

🚌Circumvesuviana train ~£5 each way; SITA 24h coastal bus ~£9; Amalfi–Maiori boat ~£10; Ravello bus ~£2.50

🛏Central Naples hostel dorm or budget guesthouse, ~£22/night

  • →Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento
  • →Sorrento panoramic stop
  • →Positano photo stop
  • →Amalfi historic centre and Duomo
  • →Shared boat Amalfi to Maiori
  • →Ravello and Villa Rufolo gardens
~£105
Day 5

Final morning in Naples and departure

Naples

Use the last morning for whatever the group tour rushes past: the Cappella Sansevero with the Veiled Christ (~€10, book a slot online to skip the queue), the Museo Archeologico Nazionale if you want Pompeii context (~€20), or a slow espresso and sfogliatella in the Spanish Quarters. Pick up a breakfast box the night before if you have an early flight (a lesson learned from the group-tour reviews). Then take the Alibus back to Capodichino — allow 45 minutes for the ride plus check-in time. If your flight is later, a B&B/hostel luggage hold in the centre costs around €5.

🚌Alibus to NAP airport ~£4.50

🛏None — departure day

  • →Cappella Sansevero and Veiled Christ (optional)
  • →National Archaeological Museum (optional)
  • →Spanish Quarters breakfast and last-minute shopping
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Capri & Amalfi Coast Escape — Self-Launched from Naples cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £545 per person for 5 days in Campania (Naples, Capri & Amalfi Coast), Italy. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Campania Overland?+

Yes — Campania Overland charges around £1,190 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £545 — a saving of roughly £645 (54%) per person.

How long is the Campania (Naples, Capri & Amalfi Coast), Italy trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Campania (Naples, Capri & Amalfi Coast), Italy.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, city-breaks, adventure trip through Campania (Naples, Capri & Amalfi Coast), Italy, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
