Costs are approximate estimates based on current backpacker rates.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and get your bearings. Book a budget guesthouse or hostel in the backpacker district around Bui Vien Street or De Tham Street — these are central, lively and easy on the wallet. Head to Ben Thanh Market to snack on street food like chao tom (barbecued shrimp on sugar cane) and che (coconut milk dessert). In the afternoon, visit the War Remnants Museum (~£1.40, VND 40,000) or the Reunification Palace (~£1.40) — both are within walking distance of most central hostels. In the evening, grab dinner on the street or at a local pho spot and get an early night ahead of the long bus journey tomorrow.

🚌Arrive by international flight into Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN). Take a Grab taxi or airport bus into the city centre (~£3–5)

🛏Hostel dorm or budget guesthouse in Bui Vien/De Tham area (e.g. The Common Room Project or similar) — ~£8–12/night

Day 2

Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh by Public Bus

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Today is a long travel day — budget around 7–8 hours including two border crossings. Book a direct international bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh through operators like Mekong Express, Giant Ibis or Kumho Samco — tickets can be booked online or at any travel agent on Bui Vien Street the evening before. The bus crosses the Moc Bai/Bavet border into Cambodia; your guide at this crossing is you, but the process is well-trodden by backpackers. Have your passport and Cambodia e-visa (apply in advance at evisa.gov.kh, ~£28) ready. On arrival in Phnom Penh, take a tuk-tuk to your guesthouse. Treat sore muscles with a Khmer massage at Seeing Hands (~£6, USD 8) — a wonderful social enterprise employing visually impaired masseurs.

🚌International bus Ho Chi Minh City → Phnom Penh with Mekong Express or Giant Ibis (~£10–13). Book at www.giantibis.com or through a local travel agent.

🛏Budget guesthouse or hostel near the riverfront (e.g. Mad Monkey Phnom Penh or Eighty8 Backpackers) — ~£8–13/night

  • Board morning bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh with Mekong Express or Giant Ibis (~£10–13)
  • Cross the Moc Bai/Bavet border (Cambodia e-visa required, ~£28 — apply in advance at evisa.gov.kh)
  • Arrive Phnom Penh, take a tuk-tuk to accommodation (~£2)
  • Optional: Khmer massage at Seeing Hands (~£6 / USD 8)
  • Self-guided orientation walk along the riverfront promenade
~£45
Day 3

Phnom Penh — History, Culture & Sunset River Cruise

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Start with a local breakfast near Phsar Thmei (Central Market) — a bowl of bai sach chrouk (pork and rice) or nom banh chok (Khmer noodles) will set you back under £1.50 at a market stall. Then make your way independently to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21, ~£3.50) and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek (~£5). Both are sobering, essential experiences — audio guides are available and highly recommended. In the afternoon, explore the Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda (~£7), the National Museum (~£7) or Wat Phnom (~£1.50) at your own pace. In the evening, book a sunset cruise on the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers — local boat operators run these from the Sisowath Quay riverfront for around £5–8, and you can grab a beer on board. End the night at a rooftop bar like Eclipse Sky Bar or Elephant Bar.

🚌Tuk-tuk or Grab app rides between sights (~£1–2 per journey). All main sites are within a short radius of the riverfront.

🛏Same as Day 2 — budget guesthouse or hostel near the riverfront — ~£8–13/night

For the adventurous, ask your guesthouse about hikes to the island's hidden waterfalls — trails lead through dense jungle to secluded spots. The 4K Beach (a 45-minute jungle walk from the village) is a stunning stretch of white sand that's far quieter than the main beach. In the evening, Nest Beach Club is the go-to spot for cocktails and a lively nightlife scene. Look out for bioluminescent plankton glowing in the water after dark — a magical natural phenomenon.

An early ferry back to Sihanoukville, then a long journey north to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed area of Sambor Prei Kuk and the rural community of Isanborei. This is a long day (~8–9 hours total) — take the morning speedboat back to Sihanoukville, then catch a bus or shared taxi towards Kampong Thom, which is the nearest town to Sambor Prei Kuk. The community homestay project can be booked directly at samborphreykouk-homestay.com — they will arrange for someone to meet you in Kampong Thom and guide you the final stretch into the village (~30 mins by tuk-tuk). Entry is around £8–10 and you can hire a bicycle from the homestay (~£2–3) to cycle the rural roads through rice fields to reach the temples. It's a serene, crowd-free alternative to Angkor. Before leaving, optionally try a tasting of Sombai Cambodian Liqueur, a local infused spirit sold in painted bottles (~£2). Then take a bus or shared taxi north to Siem Reap (~3 hours, ~£5–7). Arrive and check in to a hostel in the Old Market area. Spend the evening browsing the Night Market and street food stalls to fuel up before your big Angkor day tomorrow.

Siem Reap — Angkor Wat Sunrise & Temple Complex

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Set your alarm early — you'll want to be at Angkor Wat's western causeway by 5:15am for the sunrise. Purchase a 1-day Angkor Pass the evening before from the official ticket office on the road to Angkor (USD 37 / ~£30) — you cannot buy on the day at the gate. Arrange a tuk-tuk driver the night before through your hostel or via the Tuk Tuk app; a full-day tuk-tuk covering the Small Circuit (Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm and more) costs around £12–18 and your driver will double as a knowledgeable local guide. For a more purposeful booking, hire a female tuk-tuk driver through the Vesna Women's Tuk Tuk initiative (search online or ask at your hostel) — a social enterprise that mirrors Intrepid's own recommended operator. Highlights: Angkor Wat at sunrise, the face towers of Bayon and the jungle-wrapped ruins of Ta Prohm. Return to your hostel for a rest in the afternoon, then optionally head back to Angkor for sunset. In the evening, catch a show at Phare Cambodian Circus (~£14 / USD 18) — an extraordinary social enterprise performance.

🚌Tuk-tuk from hostel to Angkor and back all day (~£12–18, negotiate the evening before). The complex itself is explored on foot.

Day 9

Fly Siem Reap to Bangkok

Budget airlines including AirAsia, Bangkok Airways and Cambodia Angkor Air operate this route frequently — book in advance for fares from ~£35–60 (flight time ~1 hour). Note: Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on some slots and can be pricier; check AirAsia or other options first. On arrival in Bangkok, take the BTS Skytrain or Airport Rail Link into the city centre (~£1.50–3) — far cheaper than a taxi. Check in to a hostel in the Silom, Sukhumvit or Khao San Road area. Optionally treat yourself to a traditional Thai massage (~£7 / THB 300) to celebrate the end of your journey.
