£407saved per person (66%)

No-markup version: ~£208 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Booking Tours' 4-day Cairo private tour (sold via TourRadar from US$780pp), which starts and ends in Eilat, Israel. Instead of a guided group package with private driver, you cross the Taba border independently, take the East Delta bus to Cairo, base yourself in a budget hotel near Downtown or Giza, and use Cairo's cheap metro, Uber/Careem and a couple of pre-booked GetYourGuide day tours to see the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Same sights, roughly a third of the price. All costs are approximate per person, excluding international flights to Israel/Egypt.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Cross the Taba border and bus to Cairo

Eilat → Taba → Cairo

Start early in Eilat and take a taxi or local bus to the Taba border crossing (~£10-15, 20 mins). Walk across the land border (Israeli exit fee ~£8, Egyptian entry formalities on arrival; buy your Egypt entry visa sticker at the bank window on the Egyptian side for ~£20 — do not accept unofficial 'helpers' offering to sort it for you). From Taba bus station, take the East Delta / Go Bus service to Cairo (roughly 9-10 hours via the Red Sea coast, ~£8-12; Go Bus 'Elite' is the most comfortable option and can be booked online). Alternatively, cross at Taba and catch a bus to Nuweiba for a cheaper-but-slower option. Arrive Cairo in the evening, check into a budget hotel in Downtown (near Talaat Harb) or Giza, and eat a first koshari dinner for under £3.

🚌Local taxi to Taba border (~£12); walk across border; East Delta/Go Bus Taba–Cairo (~£10); Cairo metro/Uber from bus terminal (~£1)

🛏Budget hotel/hostel in Downtown Cairo or Giza (private twin ~£15-25/night, dorm ~£8-12)

  • →Taba border crossing on foot
  • →Red Sea coast bus journey
  • →Evening wander of Downtown Cairo
  • →Koshari dinner

Day 2

Pyramids of Giza, Sphinx and Saqqara

Giza

Beat the crowds with an early start — take an Uber or Careem to the Giza plateau entrance (~£2-3) before 8am. Buy your own tickets at the gate: Giza plateau ~£8, plus extra for entering the Great Pyramid interior (~£6) and the Solar Boat Museum (~£4). You can self-guide easily with a guidebook or audio app, or pre-book a small-group GetYourGuide tour with a licensed Egyptologist and hotel pickup (~£30-45 incl. entry tickets) which is the cheapest way to get context without paying for a full private guide. In the afternoon continue to Saqqara and Dahshur (Uber ~£8 each way, or join a shared minibus from Giza) to see the Step Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid; combined site ticket ~£10. Skip the camel touts inside the plateau or agree a firm price in advance. Dinner back in Giza at a local fuul/ta'ameya spot (~£4).

🚌Uber/Careem to Giza and Saqqara (~£12 total); optional shared minibus

🛏Budget hotel/hostel in Downtown Cairo or Giza (~£15-25/night)

Day 3

Egyptian Museum, Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo

Downtown & Old Cairo

Morning at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square (entry ~£8, ~£5 extra for the Royal Mummies room) — go at opening time (9am) and hire an audio guide or join a GetYourGuide skip-the-line entry with a 2-hour guided walk (~£20-25). Note the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza is now the main antiquities draw — if you prefer, swap in a half-day there (~£20 entry + ~£25 guided option). After lunch take the metro (Cairo's metro is ~£0.20 a ride, women should use the front two carriages) to Mar Girgis for Coptic Cairo: the Hanging Church, Church of St Sergius and the Ben Ezra Synagogue (free/donation). Late afternoon head to Islamic Cairo for the Cairo Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque (~£6) and then walk down to Khan el-Khalili bazaar for tea at El Fishawy and souvenir browsing — self-guided and free.

  • →Egyptian Museum (or Grand Egyptian Museum)
  • →Coptic Cairo churches & Ben Ezra Synagogue
  • →Cairo Citadel & Muhammad Ali Mosque
  • →Khan el-Khalili bazaar & El Fishawy café
~£48
Day 4

Free morning, then bus back to Eilat

Cairo → Taba → Eilat

Use the morning for anything you missed — a Nile felucca sail at sunset the previous evening or a morning sail (~£6-10 for a shared boat), the Al-Azhar Park viewpoint, or a final wander through Zamalek's cafés. Check out and take the metro or an Uber to the Go Bus / East Delta terminal for the daytime bus back to Taba (~£10, 9-10 hours). Cross the border back into Israel on foot (Israeli entry formalities, Egyptian exit stamp; keep ~£3-5 in cash for border fees), then take a local taxi or bus back to Eilat (~£10-15). If you'd rather not do the long overland return, EgyptAir and Air Cairo fly Cairo–Eilat/Tel Aviv seasonally — worth checking for one-way fares (~£60-100).

🚌Uber to bus station (~£1); Go Bus Cairo–Taba (~£10); border crossing on foot; taxi Taba–Eilat (~£12)

🛏Not included — overnight in Eilat or onward travel

  • →Optional Nile felucca sail

  • →Zamalek café morning

Frequently asked questions

How much does Cairo & Giza Self-Launched: 4 Days from the Red Sea Border cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £208 per person for 4 days in Cairo & Giza, Egypt. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Booking Tours?+

Yes — Booking Tours charges around £615 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £208 — a saving of roughly £407 (66%) per person.

How long is the Cairo & Giza, Egypt trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Cairo & Giza, Egypt.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, budget, backpacker trip through Cairo & Giza, Egypt, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
