On The Go Tours charges £4,330

No-markup version: ~£1,245 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of On The Go Tours' 12-day "Natural Wonders of Brazil" loop: Rio's beaches and icons, both sides of Iguazu Falls, Oscar Niemeyer's modernist Brasília, and four days deep in the Pantanal spotting caimans, capybara and (if you're lucky) jaguars. You'll use domestic flights and long-distance coaches, book day tours locally or via GetYourGuide, and stay in hostels, pousadas and simple guesthouses instead of the operator's mid-range hotels. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP and exclude international flights to/from Brazil.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Land in Rio, settle into Copacabana or Botafogo

Rio de Janeiro

Fly into Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU) and take the local BRT or a 99/Uber to your hostel in Botafogo or Copacabana (roughly £4–7). Check in, get a Brazilian SIM (Vivo/Claro eSIM from ~£5 for 10GB) and a Rio Card for metro and buses. Spend the late afternoon walking Copacabana beach, grab an açaí or a prato feito (rice, beans, meat) at a neighbourhood 'por quilo' buffet for £4–6, and plan tomorrow's sightseeing. Book your Corcovado + Sugarloaf tickets online tonight to skip queues.

Buses run out to the Super Quadras (Super Blocks) residential district and the Dom Bosco Sanctuary. Free guided tours of some government buildings run on weekdays — check the visitor centre. Day 7

Overland or fly to the Pantanal (Poconé)

Pantanal (Poconé)

Either fly Brasília–Cuiabá (~£70–100, 1h45) then take a bus/taxi to Poconé and onward transport to a pousada, or take a long-distance coach (14h+, ~£30) which saves money but costs a day. Most budget Pantanal lodges include road transfer from Cuiabá. Choose a local pousada in the Poconé/Transpantaneira area and book a 3-night full-board package (lodging, all meals, and daily guides, typically £55–75 per person per night at the budget end). Afternoon: first 4WD drive along the Transpantaneira spotting caiman, capybara and marsh deer.

Pantanal: horseback riding and river boat

Pantanal (Poconé)

Guided morning horseback ride across the savannah — the classic Pantanal way to cover ground and spot wildlife quietly (£25–35 when not bundled into your package; budget lodges often include it). After lunch, a motorboat trip down local rivers with your local guide: expect hyacinth macaws, kingfishers, families of capybara and plenty of yacare caiman. Bring high-factor sun cream, long sleeves and mosquito repellent. Evening: night safari or stargazing back at the pousada.

Day 9

Pantanal: canoeing and deep wildlife search

Pantanal (Poconé)

Today is the slow one: paddle a canoe along quiet waterways with a local guide for close-up wildlife encounters without engine noise — often the best chance of seeing howler monkeys, giant otters and rare birds. Afternoon 4WD trek to flooded bays and grasslands. If you're in the dry season (roughly July–October), ask your guide about longer jeep drives to jaguar hotspots like Porto Jofre — budget an extra ~£60–90 if you add a full jaguar-focused day. Otherwise spend the afternoon at a lookout tower.

🚌Included lodge transport to canoe launch and trails

🛏Pantanal pousada, full board (£60–75/night including meals and guides)

Pantanal final morning, transfer back to Cuiabá

Pantanal / Cuiabá

Early-morning birdwatching walk around the lodge before breakfast, then the road transfer back to Cuiabá. Depending on your flight, overnight in a cheap Cuiabá hotel (£12–18) with a supermarket dinner, or take an evening flight. Budget lodges include the transfer in the package; if not, expect ~£15–20 shared.

Fly back to Rio, Lapa night out

Evening: explore Lapa's arches and live samba bars (entry typically £3–8), grab street caipirinhas and a churrascaria dinner (~£9–14) or a cheaper pastel and juice. If it's a weekend, the Lapa street party (Beco do Rato area) is a Rio rite of passage — go with hostel-mates and keep your phone zipped away.

🚌Domestic flight Cuiabá–Rio (~£95) + Uber (~£4)

🛏Hostel dorm in Botafogo/Lapa (£12–16/night)

  • →Lapa samba bars
  • →Live music

Sunrise at Ipanema and fly home

Rio de Janeiro

Last morning: sunrise walk on Ipanema, a cheap breakfast at a juice bar (suco + pão de queijo, ~£3), and a last wander around Santa Teresa's trams and street art if time allows. Metro or 99/Uber to the airport for your international flight. If you want to extend, hostels in Rio are flexible — add nights directly rather than through an operator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Natural Wonders of Brazil – 12-Day Self-Launched Adventure cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,245 per person for 12 days in Brazil. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with On The Go Tours?+

Yes — On The Go Tours charges around £4,330 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,245 — a saving of roughly £3,085 (71%) per person.

How long is the Brazil trip?+

This itinerary runs 12 days, covering 12 day-by-day stops through Brazil.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, culture trip through Brazil, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
