Andes to the Atlantic: Self-Launched Bolivia to Brazil

25 days · Bolivia & Brazil (with Atacama & Argentina)

G Adventures charges £2,890

£765saved per person (26%)

No-markup version: ~£2,125 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 25-day "Andes to the Atlantic Experience" (SXLR), running from La Paz over the Uyuni Salt Flats, through colonial Potosí and Sucre, by overnight train to the Brazilian border, into the Pantanal wetlands, on to Bonito's caves and rivers, over Iguassu Falls, and down the coast via Paraty and Ilha Grande to Rio de Janeiro. Everything the group tour does — the 3-day salt flats 4x4, Pantanal wildlife excursion, both sides of Iguassu and internal transport — rebuilt from local buses, trains, shared 4x4 tours and hostel dorms booked direct. Costs are rough 2025 backpacker estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive La Paz — acclimatise at 3,600m

La Paz, Bolivia

Land at El Alto (3,600m+), take a taxi or shared minibus down into the bowl of La Paz (~BOB 70-100 / £8-11). Book a bed in a Sopocachi or Central hostel and do almost nothing: coca tea, water, early night. Altitude is the real boss of day one — the group tour gives you a free day here too, so use it. If you feel strong by evening, ride the Mi Teleférico cable cars (BOB 3 per line, ~£0.35) for a sunset over the city.

Book your 3-day salt flats tour direct with a Uyuni agency — the classic La Paz–Uyuni route. Skip the operator's train+bus combo and take a full-cama overnight bus from La Paz's Terminal de Buses (Todo Turismo or Trans Omar, ~BOB 250-300 / £27-33), leaving around 20:00 and arriving Uyuni ~06:30.

Join a shared 3-day/2-night 4x4 loop (agency-booked in Uyuni the day before, ~BOB 900-1,200 / £95-130 per person including food and basic lodging). Day one: Train Cemetery, Colchani salt works, the endless white hexagons of the Salar, Isla Incahuasi with its cactus forest, and sunset on the flats. Bring cash — there are no ATMs beyond Uyuni — plus a warm sleeping bag; nights on the altiplano hit -10°C.

Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, Bolivia

Continue south by 4x4 through the altiplano: Laguna Cañapa, Hedionda and Chiarkota where flamingos feed, the rock formations of the Siloli Desert, and the Arbol de Piedra. Wild llamas, vicuñas and alpacas the whole way. Note there is no wifi or phone signal out here and the lodges are unheated multi-share with shared bathrooms — same setup as the operator's community lodge nights, minus the markup.

The 4x4 returns you to Uyuni by late afternoon. Note: many operators here continue into San Pedro de Atacama in Chile — if you'd rather keep the Chilean extension, swap days 6-9 accordingly; otherwise head back to Uyuni town for the night. Cheap dinner at a local salteña joint (~£4).

In Corumbá, book a 2-night Pantanal package direct with a local pousada (~R$1,200-1,600 / £165-220 all-in with meals, guides and transfers). Afternoon at the Gruta Azul (R$100 / £14) or the Balneário Municipal for a cheap swim (R$60 / £8). Frequently asked questions

How much does Andes to the Atlantic: Self-Launched Bolivia to Brazil cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £2,125 per person for 25 days in Bolivia & Brazil (with Atacama & Argentina). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,890 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £2,125 — a saving of roughly £765 (26%) per person.

How long is the Bolivia & Brazil (with Atacama & Argentina) trip?+

This itinerary runs 25 days, covering 25 day-by-day stops through Bolivia & Brazil (with Atacama & Argentina).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, backpacker, hiking trip through Bolivia & Brazil (with Atacama & Argentina), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
