A DIY half-day version of G Adventures' Bangkok city highlights tour: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho's Reclining Buddha, the cross-river ferry to Wat Arun and a proper Pad Thai lunch — all doable on foot and by public ferry for under a tenner (excluding entrance fees). Temples open at 08:30, so start early to beat the heat and the tour buses. Book the Grand Palace ticket online in advance to skip the queue, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), and expect the whole loop to take about 4–5 hours. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Grand Palace, Reclining Buddha, ferry to Wat Arun & Pad Thai

Bangkok (Rattanakosin & Thonburi)

Start at 08:30 at MRT Sanam Chai (Museum Siam exit) — same meeting point as the group tour, but you're your own guide. Walk 10 minutes to the Grand Palace and buy your ticket online the day before (500 THB / ~£11) to skip the ticket-window queue; it opens at 08:30 and you'll want to be inside before 09:30 when the coach groups arrive. Allow 1.5 hours for the Palace complex and Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha). Strict dress code: covered shoulders and knees, no flip-flops — sarongs can be borrowed at the gate but it's a hassle. Walk 10 minutes south to Wat Pho; entry 300 THB (~£7) includes a free bottle of water and the Reclining Buddha, plus the courtyard spires everyone photographs. Optional: a 30-minute traditional Thai massage at the temple's massage school for ~300 THB (~£7). Then walk 10 minutes to Tha Tien pier and cross the Chao Phraya on the public cross-river ferry for 5 THB (~£0.15) — yes, that cheap. On the Thonburi side, have Pad Thai at a riverside shophouse or the street stalls near Tha Tien/Wat Arun (60–100 THB, ~£1.50–2.50), then explore Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn, 200 THB / ~£4.50) with its 70m central spire and climbable prangs. Finish around 13:00 — either take the ferry back to Tha Tien and walk to MRT Sanam Chai, or taxi to an evening rooftop. Temples need shoulders and knees covered all day; bring a sarong.

🚌MRT to Sanam Chai (approx £0.60 per ride), walking between Palace/Wat Pho, cross-river public ferry 5 THB (~£0.15) each way

🛏Not included (day tour) — if basing yourself nearby, hostels around Khao San, Banglamphu or Chinatown run £8–18/night for a dorm

Frequently asked questions

How much does Bangkok City Highlights: Self-Launched Day Tour cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £17 per person for 1 days in Bangkok. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £75 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £17 — a saving of roughly £58 (77%) per person.

How long is the Bangkok trip?+

This itinerary runs 1 days, covering 1 day-by-day stops through Bangkok.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, city-breaks, budget trip through Bangkok, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
