A DIY version of STM Tours' 4-day Armenia highlights loop — Yerevan's Cascades, Republic Square and Matenadaran, the pagan Temple of Garni and Symphony of Stones gorge, Lake Sevan, Khor Virap with Mount Ararat views, and wine tasting in Areni. All replaced with hostel/guesthouse stays in Yerevan, self-booked day tours or shared minibuses (marshrutkas), public transport from Zvartnots airport, and local wine tasting direct at the winery. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Yerevan & walk the city centre

Yerevan

Land at Zvartnots International Airport and take the official airport minibus or taxi into the centre (around 300–500 AMD by shared minibus, ~£4–6 by taxi — agree the price first or use the Yandex Go app). Check into a central hostel or guesthouse near Kentron. Spend the afternoon on a self-guided walking loop: start at Republic Square, stroll up North Avenue to the Opera House, then climb the Cascade Complex for sunset views over the city and Mount Ararat on a clear day. Finish with a look at the Blue Mosque on Mashtots Avenue and, if time allows, the Matenadaran manuscript museum (small entry fee, closed Mondays). Evening: khorovats or a cheap lahmejun dinner in the Kond or Saryan Street area.

Day 2

Garni Temple, Symphony of Stones & Lake Sevan

Garni / Geghard / Lake Sevan

Join a small-group day tour booked independently through GetYourGuide or Klook, or arrange a seat in a shared minibus from Yerevan's Kilikia bus station — this is the classic 'Garni–Geghard–Sevan' loop that local operators run daily and is far cheaper than a private car. Stop at the Arch of Charents for the Ararat viewpoint, then explore the pagan Temple of Garni (entry ~£2) and walk down into the Garni Gorge to see the basalt Symphony of Stones formation (light 20–30 min walk each way). Optional add-on: the cave-carved Geghard Monastery nearby. In the afternoon continue to Lake Sevan, climb the peninsula steps to Sevanavank Monastery and have a trout lunch by the water. Return to Yerevan in the evening.

Day 3

Khor Virap & Areni wine tasting

Ararat Plain / Areni

Head south to the Ararat Plain for Khor Virap monastery, the closest point to Mount Ararat and the site of the pit where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned — climb down into the dungeon. Getting there independently: take a marshrutka to Ararat/Pokr Vedi and then a short taxi, or (simpler and often cheaper overall) book a shared small-group Khor Virap + Areni day tour via GetYourGuide/Klook. Continue to Areni village for a wine tasting at Areni Winery or one of the smaller family cellars — tastings are ~£5–8 and can be booked directly on arrival or by phone/email. Optional side visit to Noravank monastery in the red-rock gorge. Return to Yerevan by late afternoon.

🚌Marshrutka + shared taxi to Ararat/Areni or shared day-tour transport (~£15–18)

Day 4

Yerevan markets & departure

Yerevan

Morning at leisure: browse the Vernissage open-air market for carpets, silverwork and souvenirs, pick up supplies at GUM market for dried fruit and basturma, and grab a last coffee on Saryan Street. Check out and take the airport minibus or a taxi back to Zvartnots for your flight home. If your departure is later, the History Museum of Armenia on Republic Square is a good final stop (~£3).

🚌Airport minibus/shared taxi from centre (~£4)

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Vernissage market
  • →GUM food market
  • →Optional History Museum of Armenia

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Armenia Highlights: 4 Days in Yerevan, Garni & Lake Sevan cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £287 per person for 4 days in Armenia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with STM Tours LLC?+

Yes — STM Tours LLC charges around £410 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £287 — a saving of roughly £123 (30%) per person.

How long is the Armenia trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Armenia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, adventure, budget trip through Armenia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
