Walking in the Pyrenees: Andorra Self-Launched
8 days · Andorra & the Catalan Pyrenees
Explore! charges £1,285
No-markup version: ~£690 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched, solo-friendly version of Explore!'s 8-day Andorra walking week. Instead of a guided group and 3* hotel, you base yourself in a budget guesthouse in Soldeu (or nearby Canillo) and use Andorra's excellent, cheap public bus network (the national bus co-op, Cooperativa Interurbana Andorrana) plus short taxis to reach the same trailheads: the Cami del Gall from Meritxell, the UNESCO-listed Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley, Vall de Riu down to Canillo, the Sorteny reserve to Estanyó lake, and the Siscaro lakes above Incles. Trails are marked (GR/PR waymarking) and the Andorran tourist office provides free route maps and GPX files, so no guide is needed. You arrive and depart via Barcelona (direct bus from Barcelona's Estació del Nord to Andorra la Vella, then a local bus up the valley). Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP and exclude international flights.
Day-by-day
Barcelona to Soldeu
Barcelona → Soldeu, Andorra
Skip the group airport transfer and travel independently. From Barcelona Airport take the Aerobús or R2 train into the city, then the direct ALSA/Andbus coach from Estació del Nord to Andorra la Vella (about 3h, roughly £26-30 one way). From Andorra la Vella's bus station, take a local bus up the Valira d'Orient valley to Soldeu (about 30-40 min, £2-3, frequent until early evening; a taxi is around £20 if you arrive late). Check into your guesthouse, then do a short evening orientation stroll through the village and pick up free trail maps from the tourist office. If you have a spare morning in Barcelona, La Boqueria market and the Gothic Quarter are a 15-minute walk from Estació del Nord.
🚌Aerobús/train into Barcelona (~£5), ALSA/Andbus coach to Andorra la Vella (~£27), local bus to Soldeu (~£3)

Meritxell to Soldeu via the Cami del Gall
Meritxell → Soldeu
Take the local bus down the valley to Meritxell (10 min, ~£2) and visit the Meritxell Sanctuary — Andorra's patron saint shrine, rebuilt after a 1972 fire with striking modern frescoes (free entry). From the sanctuary follow the Cami del Gall path back up to Soldeu: about 10.5 km, 4 hours, 600 m ascent and 200 m descent, waymarked and easy to follow. Pack a picnic from the Soldeu supermarket the night before. Afternoon free for laundry, planning tomorrow's longer day, or a dip in a mountain river pool.
🚌Local public bus Soldeu–Meritxell (~£2), return on foot
🛏Budget guesthouse/pension in Soldeu
- →Meritxell Sanctuary (free)
- →Self-navigated Cami del Gall walk, 10.5 km

Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley
Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley
A UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape and the highlight of the week. From Soldeu take the bus to Andorra la Vella or Escaldes (about 30 min, £2-3), then a short taxi or local bus to the Ràmio/Engolasters trailhead (taxi ~£10 split if you meet other hikers). Walk up to the Fontverd Refuge and the Engolasters plateau: 10 km, about 4.5 hours, 750 m up and down. Refs have basic menus; a hearty mountain lunch at Fontverd is roughly £12-15, or bring your own. Download the route GPX from the Andorra tourist office site in advance — signage is good but junctions need attention.
🚌Bus Soldeu–Escaldes/Andorra la Vella (~£3), short taxi to trailhead (~£5-10 shared)
🛏Budget guesthouse/pension in Soldeu
- →Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley hike, 10 km

Vall de Riu to Canillo
Ransol → Canillo
Take the local bus to Ransol (10 min, ~£2) or a short taxi, then hike the Vall de Riu down to Canillo: 11 km, about 5 hours, 600 m ascent and 1,000 m descent — a long, quiet valley with almost no one on the trail. In Canillo, visit the Romanesque Sant Serni chapel and the village's old stone core, then catch the bus back up to Soldeu (or stay for the Tibetan suspension bridge if you have energy). Note that the descent is hard on the knees — poles help.
🚌Local bus Soldeu–Ransol (~£2), bus Canillo–Soldeu (~£2)
🛏Budget guesthouse/pension in Soldeu
- →Vall de Riu hike, 11 km
- →Canillo Romanesque chapel and old village

Andorra la Vella rest day
Andorra la Vella / Escaldes-Engordany
A lower-mileage day. Bus down to the capital (30-40 min, £2-3) and see the Casa de la Vall (one of Europe's smallest parliament buildings, ~£4 entry) and Sant Esteve church. If you want a spa afternoon, Caldea's thermo facilities cost from about £35-45 for a 3-hour slot — book online in advance for the cheaper rate. Alternatively take the bus to Canillo for the Pessons Lakes walk (8 km, 450 m ascent, free) or the free Tibetan suspension bridge. Budget about £15-20 for a proper sit-down lunch in town.
🚌Return bus Soldeu–Andorra la Vella (~£5)
🛏Budget guesthouse/pension in Soldeu
- →Casa de la Vall parliament (~£4)
- →Sant Esteve church (free)
- →Optional Caldea spa, 3h (~£40)
- →Optional Pessons Lakes self-guided walk
Sorteny Valley to Estanyó Lake
Sorteny Nature Reserve
Bus to La Cortinada or Serrat in the Ordino valley (about 35-45 min with a change, £3-4), then walk or take a short taxi to the Sorteny reserve car park. Hike to Estanyó lake: 10 km, roughly 4.5 hours, 600 m up and 600 m down, through wildflower meadows that are spectacular in June-July. Lunch at the Sorteny Refuge (a simple Andorran mountain menu, ~£12-16) is a worthy splurge and matches the tour's included lunch. Return by the same bus route — check the last departure time at the trailhead board and don't miss it.
🚌Bus Soldeu–Ordino/Serrat (~£4), optional short shared taxi to reserve car park (~£5)
🛏Budget guesthouse/pension in Soldeu
- →Sorteny Nature Reserve to Estanyó Lake hike, 10 km
- →Lunch at Sorteny Refuge (pay on the day)
- →Wildflower meadows and alpine lake
Incles Valley to the Siscaro Lakes
Incles Valley
The best-value day of the week: from Soldeu walk 20 minutes or take a 5-minute bus to the mouth of the Incles valley (free or £2), then head up to the Siscaro lakes — 13 km round trip, about 4.5 hours, 750 m up and down, with a chain of tarns and dramatic granite walls. Picnic at the lakes. Strong hikers can push on towards the Incles Pass before turning back. This is a popular local route so you'll have company and clear waymarks. Last night in Soldeu — pack and check tomorrow's bus times.
🚌Walk or local bus to Incles trailhead (~£2), return on foot
🛏Budget guesthouse/pension in Soldeu
- →Incles Valley to Siscaro Lakes hike, 13 km
- →Optional extension towards Incles Pass
- →Picnic lunch at the lakes
Soldeu to Barcelona
Soldeu → Andorra la Vella → Barcelona
Morning local bus down to Andorra la Vella (£3), then the direct ALSA/Andbus coach to Barcelona Estació del Nord (~£27, book online a day or two ahead in summer). From there the Aerobús or R2 train reaches the airport in about 30-40 minutes (£5). Allow at least 4.5-5 hours door to door with buffer — the tour's group transfer aims at a 12:30 airport arrival, so book an afternoon or evening flight. Optional extra: spend a final night in Barcelona hostels (from ~£25 dorm) rather than flying straight out.
🚌Local bus to Andorra la Vella (~£3), Andbus coach to Barcelona (~£27), Aerobús to airport (~£5)
🛏None (or optional Barcelona hostel from ~£25)
- →Independent transfer back to Barcelona
- →Optional final afternoon in Barcelona

Frequently asked questions
How much does Walking in the Pyrenees: Andorra Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £690 per person for 8 days in Andorra & the Catalan Pyrenees. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Explore!?+
Yes — Explore! charges around £1,285 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £690 — a saving of roughly £595 (46%) per person.
How long is the Andorra & the Catalan Pyrenees trip?+
This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Andorra & the Catalan Pyrenees.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a hiking, adventure, budget trip through Andorra & the Catalan Pyrenees, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
