An independent, self-launched version of Choose Balkans' 4-day Theth, Valbona & Koman Lake trip. You'll ride the early furgon (shared minibus) north from Tirana via Shkodra, hike to the Blue Eye spring, walk to Grunas Waterfall, cross the epic Valbona Pass on foot, and finish with the scenic Komani Lake boat ride back to Shkodra/Tirana. All transport, guesthouse beds and trail logistics are booked directly by you via local guesthouses, Albanian bus operators and the Komani Lake ferry — no tour group, no middleman. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP; guesthouses in the Alps are simple family-run places with hearty home-cooked dinners.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Tirana → Shkodra → Theth, Blue Eye spring & village sights

Theth, Albanian Alps

Leave Tirana around 05:30 on the early furgon (shared minibus) to Shkodra (~2h, 400-500 lek / ~£4). From Shkodra catch the once-daily 4x4 minibus up the unpaved mountain road to Theth (~2.5-3h, ~1,000 lek / ~£9) — book it the day before through your guesthouse or the Shkodra bus station; departures are typically mid-morning, so check times locally. After checking into your guesthouse, walk out to the Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër): about 1 hour each way on foot from the trailhead, or shorten it by taking a local 4x4 on the dirt track from Theth village to Nderlysaj (~£5-6 per person) and walking the final 40 minutes. On the way back visit the Old Church of Theth and the Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) in the village centre — both free or small donation. Dinner is home-cooked at the guesthouse.

🚌Furgon Tirana–Shkodra (~£4) + mountain minibus Shkodra–Theth (~£9)

🛏Family-run guesthouse in Theth village (simple twin/triple rooms, shared or en-suite bathroom) — ~£18 pp

  • →Scenic drive past Shkodra Lake into the Albanian Alps
  • →Hike to the Blue Eye spring (approx. 3h round trip on foot)
  • →Visit the Old Church of Theth
  • →Visit the Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit)
~£52
Day 2

Theth: Grunas Waterfall and valley trails

Theth National Park

Easy, beautiful day in the Theth valley. Walk from the village centre to Grunas Waterfall — roughly 1 hour on a marked trail each way, with a stop to see the watermill and the dramatic Grunas canyon on the route. In the afternoon, add a loop to the Theth valley viewpoints or walk toward Nderlysaj along the river if your legs are fresh. Maps.me / OsmAnd plus locally posted trail signs are enough; no guide needed. Buy picnic supplies in the village or order lunch at the guesthouse — food in the valley is limited so carry cash (Albanian lek, ATMs are scarce in Theth).

🚌On foot (all trails start from the village)

🛏Same family-run guesthouse in Theth — ~£18 pp including breakfast

  • →Hike to Grunas Waterfall (~1h each way)
  • →View Grunas canyon and the old watermill
  • →Optional afternoon valley walk toward Nderlysaj
~£38
Day 3

Theth → Valbona over Valbona Pass

Valbona Valley National Park

The big day: the classic Theth–Valbona crossing over Qafa e Valbonës (Valbona Pass, ~1,795m). It's roughly 6-8 hours, 16-18km with around 1,000m of ascent and a steep descent — start early (by 07:00) and only do it in good weather with proper boots. The trail is marked in red-and-white; download the route offline on Maps.me before you set off. At the pass you get views over the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Namuna) and the Peaks of the Balkans ridge. From the trailhead on the Valbona side, either walk 1.5h down the valley road to your guesthouse in Valbona village or flag a local van/4x4 (~£5 per person, arrange with your Valbona guesthouse in advance). Dinner and a cold beer at the guesthouse — one of the best-value nights of the trip.

🚌On foot over Valbona Pass; optional local 4x4 in Valbona valley (~£5)

🛏Family-run guesthouse in Valbona Valley — ~£20 pp with breakfast and dinner

  • →Trek Theth to Valbona via Valbona Pass (~6-8h)
  • →Views of the Accursed Mountains and Peaks of the Balkans ridge
~£45
Day 4

Valbona → Komani Lake boat → Shkodra / Tirana

Komani Lake, Albania

Take the early local transport from Valbona to Fierza (about 1h by shared van/minibus, ~£4-5 — ask your guesthouse to arrange it the night before). Board the Komani Lake ferry (the 'Berisha' car ferry or a passenger boat) from Fierza to Koman, roughly 2.5 hours through the fjord-like gorge past waterfalls and tiny villages — tickets are bought at the port or booked through guesthouses/agencies, around £6-8. From the Koman dam, shared vans or furgons run to Shkodra (~1.5h, ~£5) and onward to Tirana (~2h, ~£5-6). Aim to be back in Tirana by early evening; the last Tirana-bound buses leave Shkodra in the afternoon, so travel early. Note the lake ferry doesn't run every sailing in shoulder season — confirm the schedule in Shkodra before heading north.

🚌Valbona–Fierza shared van (~£5) + Komani Lake ferry (~£7) + van to Shkodra (~£5) + bus to Tirana (~£6)

🛏Not included (hostel in Tirana ~£12-15 if you stay the night)

  • →Komani Lake ferry through the canyon
  • →Views of Vau i Dejës Lake on the return drive
~£38

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Albanian Alps: Theth, Valbona & Koman Lake in 4 Days cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £173 per person for 4 days in Albanian Alps (Theth & Valbona), Albania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Choose Balkans?+

Yes — Choose Balkans charges around £328 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £173 — a saving of roughly £155 (47%) per person.

How long is the Albanian Alps (Theth & Valbona), Albania trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Albanian Alps (Theth & Valbona), Albania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, budget trip through Albanian Alps (Theth & Valbona), Albania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
