Istanbul to Tehran by Rail: The Self-Launched Version

A 17-day independent rail-and-road route from Istanbul east across Turkey to Cappadocia, Lake Van and Mt Ararat, then overland by the Trans-Asia train into Iran for Tehran, Shiraz, Persepolis, Isfahan and back. This is the do-it-yourself rebuild of G Adventures' ETIR trip: same spine of destinations, but you book your own buses, trains, hostel beds and day tours — and pay roughly a third of the group tour price. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP and assume shared dorm or simple twin rooms, local eateries and second-class rail. Budget extra if you want private rooms throughout. Note: Iran visa authorisation (and guide requirements for UK/US/Canadian passports) must be sorted well in advance.
