Trans-Mongolian Adventure: Self-Launched Moscow to Beijing by Rail

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 16-day Trans-Mongolian Adventure: Moscow's Red Square and Kremlin, six days aboard the legendary Trans-Siberian, a homestay on the shore of Lake Baikal, a night in a traditional ger in Terelj National Park, and the Great Wall at Mutianyu before Beijing's hutongs and Tiananmen Square. You book your own 2nd-class kupe (4-berth) rail tickets between Moscow–Irkutsk, Irkutsk–Ulaanbaatar and Ulaanbaatar–Beijing, stay in hostels and family guesthouses, and use marshrutkas and the metro instead of a private bus. Costs are rough backpacker estimates and exclude international flights; the Russian, Mongolian and Chinese visas are the biggest single extra — plan them well in advance.
