Self-Launched Trans-Mongolian Express: Beijing to St Petersburg by Rail

A 19-day DIY version of G Adventures' Trans-Mongolian Express — ride the world's greatest railway from Beijing across the Gobi and Mongolian steppe, stop for a night in a Terelj ger camp, swim in Lake Baikal, and continue through the Siberian taiga to Yekaterinburg, Moscow and St Petersburg. You book your own train segments (often separately, station by station), stay in hostels and family guesthouses, and swap the tour group for local guides and self-guided exploring at a fraction of the price. Costs are approximate backpacker estimates in GBP and assume 2nd-class (kupe) sleeper rail and shared/dorm or simple twin accommodation; the biggest variable is train ticket availability, especially in July–August, so book Kupe berths on Russian Railways (rzd.ru) and the Beijing–Ulaanbaatar train as early as possible (Chinese and Mongolian train tickets are generally only released a set number of days ahead and are often easier to arrange through a local agency in Beijing or Ulaanbaatar).
