A self-launched, rail-based run from Kochi to Kolkata covering the Kerala backwaters, the southern tip at Kanyakumari, temple city Madurai, the rock-cut shore temples of Mamallapuram, bazaars and forts in Hyderabad, the temple town of Puri and Odisha's craft villages — finishing with a long day train up the east coast into Kolkata. You book every train yourself on IRCTC (or a reseller like 12Go Asia), stay in guesthouses and hostels rather than tour hotels, and join local guides only where they add value.
