A self-launched version of Europamundo's 6-day "South Japan Express" loop from Osaka, rebuilt for independent travellers using Japan's superb rail and ferry network. You'll cover the same headline sights — Himeji Castle, Korakuen Garden, Kurashiki's canal district, Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Museum, Miyajima's Itsukushima Shrine, Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Onsen, Kotohira Shrine, Ritsurin Garden, the Naruto whirlpool bridge and Kobe's Earthquake Memorial Museum — but on hostel/guesthouse accommodation, JR trains and the Seto Inland Sea ferries instead of a coach with 70 other people. Costs are rough estimates for one person in shared dorm or budget private rooms, using a Japan Rail Pass (Kansai-Hiroshima area or full 7-day pass) for the long legs. Note: the original packs in very long bus days — this version trims transit time by using shinkansen and ferries, so you actually get to linger at the sites.
