Instead of 15 nights aboard the G Expedition, this self-launched route stitches together the same headline experiences — Edinburgh's departure, Orkney's Neolithic stones, Shetland's seabird cliffs, the Briksdal and Geiranger fjords, Trondheim's cathedral, Vega's island fishing life, and Norway's far-north coast — using coastal ferries (Hurtigruten), local buses, trains and budget accommodation. For the final Arctic leg to Longyearbyen, you'll still need a cruise berth, but booking a smaller, no-frills expedition line directly (or a cabin-only ferry option where available) cuts the premium significantly.
