A self-launched version of G Adventures' 8-day Northern Madagascar Explorer (trip code DMNM), running from Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) to Nosy Be via Amber Mountain National Park, Ankarana Reserve's limestone tsingy, and the marine reserve of Nosy Tanikely. Instead of a private minibus and group CEO you use shared taxis-brousse, local guides hired at park gates, and public/private pirogue boats. Expect simple hotels and bungalows, plenty of lemurs, and rough-but-rewarding roads. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP; domestic flights or the long overland bus from Antananarivo are extra and not included here.
