Gilgit-Baltistan (Skardu, Khaplu, Nangma Valley, Thallay Valley, Shigar) & Islamabad, Pakistan

1 itinerary · 0 open departures · 0 missions

Gilgit-Baltistan is Pakistan's northernmost territory, home to some of the highest mountains on Earth — including K2, the world's second-highest peak — along with the Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindu Kush ranges converging in one dramatic landscape. Towns like Skardu, Shigar, and Khaplu serve as gateways to legendary trekking routes, while remote valleys such as Nangma and Thallay draw climbers and adventurers seeking raw, off-the-beaten-path wilderness. Islamabad, Pakistan's modern capital, is the typical entry point — offering a well-organised base with good transport links north. Travellers come for world-class trekking, mountaineering, high-altitude camping, and a deep encounter with Balti culture and ancient Silk Road heritage.

Self-Launched Nangma Valley Trek & Thallay La Crossing — Karakoram on Your Own

A self-launched version of Beyond the Valley's 15-day Karakoram trek: Islamabad's sights, the flight or Karakoram Highway ride to Skardu, Khaplu's forts and villages, the meadows of Nangma Valley beneath Amin Brakk, and a crossing of the Thallay La high pass into Shigar. Instead of a fully guided group package with internal flights and private transport, you'll book your own guesthouses, use PIA flights or the Karakoram Highway, hire a local Balti guide/porter directly in Skardu or Khaplu for the trekking section only, and arrange shared jeeps for village links. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP — high-altitude logistics, permits and guide wages are the wildcards, so budget a buffer. Trekking season is roughly late June to mid-September.

Missions

Nobody's posted a Mission for Gilgit-Baltistan (Skardu, Khaplu, Nangma Valley, Thallay Valley, Shigar) & Islamabad, Pakistan yet — which, frankly, is an opportunity.

Wait, what's a Mission? It's not a scheduled trip with dates and a minimum group size like a Departure — it's a goal. Learn to dive, do a Muay Thai camp, live somewhere for a month and work on something, chase one very specific experience. Post it, and other people chasing the same thing find you.

Be the first to post one: "Learn a completely impractical skill from a local — fire spinning, competitive coconut opening, whatever — and become weirdly good at it."
