Trans-Mongolian Railway: Ulaanbaatar to Shanghai (Self-Launched)

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 16-day Classic trip from Ulaanbaatar to Shanghai. You'll do the same headline experiences — Ulaanbaatar's monasteries and palaces, sand dunes and ger camps on the steppe, a nomadic family dumpling lunch, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, the legendary overnight train to Beijing, the Mutianyu Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors and Shanghai's Bund — but booking each piece yourself through hostels, ger camps, local drivers and Chinese rail. Expect basic shared-facility gers in Mongolia and clean budget hotels or hostels in China. Costs are approximate 2025/26 backpacker rates and exclude international flights; you'll need to sort your own Chinese visa (and possibly a Letter of Invitation) in advance.
