The historic city of Chinguetti, once a major Islamic pilgrimage hub, and the coastal capital Nouakchott draw travellers interested in Saharan culture and archaeology. 10-Day Mauritania Self-Launched Adventure: Nouakchott, Chinguetti & the Iron Ore Train

A self-launched version of the classic 10-day Mauritania loop — Adrar's caravan towns, Saharan oases, rock art and the legendary iron ore train — done independently using local bush taxis, shared 4x4s and guesthouses. Starting and ending in Nouakchott, you'll travel overland via Atar into the UNESCO-listed ksour of Chinguetti and Ouadane, soak in the Terjit oasis hot springs, and ride the world's longest train from Zouérat down to the Atlantic coast at Nouadhibou before looping back south. This is genuinely off-the-beaten-path travel: infrastructure is thin, timings are loose, and a local fixer/driver is worth hiring for the Adrar leg (costed in below).
