A self-launched 10-day version of Penguin Travel's classic Hargeisa-to-Djibouti loop: Neolithic rock art at Laas Geel and Dhagah Khoure, Berbera's colonial port and beaches, then across the border into Djibouti for Lake Abbé's limestone chimneys, Afar nomad camps, Tadjourah's white-washed coast and the salt-encrusted shores of Lake Assal — the lowest point in Africa. You'll do it with local fixers and drivers on the ground rather than a fully guided group, staying in the same guesthouses and Afar camps and eating where locals eat. Note: Somaliland and Djibouti are genuinely logistically tricky — independent travel is possible but requires a local guide/driver for most sites (Laas Geel, Lake Abbé, Lake Assal), so this itinerary assumes you'll hire a driver-guide locally in Hargeisa and Djibouti City rather than joining a group tour.
