Take high-speed trains and sleeper buses between Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Lijiang, Dali, Kunming, Jianshui and Yuanyang, then cross the Hekou border into Sapa and finish in Hanoi. All the same headline sights — Forbidden City, Mutianyu Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, pandas, Lijiang Old Town, Dali, Yuanyang rice terraces, Hmong batik and a Sapa trek — booked yourself via hostels, local guides and public transport.
