Instead of a guided van tour, you self-drive (or mix Amtrak/ESTA/YARTS buses) through Gold Rush country, Yosemite Valley, the giant sequoias of Tuolumne Grove, the Tioga Pass high country, Bodie Ghost Town and Lake Tahoe, ending back in San Francisco. Costs assume a solo traveller in hostel/budget-motel rooms, with shared campervan or rental car costs if travelling with others (rental plus fuel split roughly halves the transport figure). Note: US national park entry is now $100 per non-resident adult (16+); an America the Beautiful annual pass (~£60/$80) covers entry for up to four people — worth it if you'll hit two or more parks.
